Cape Cod / Herreshoff Goldeneye
Designed by Nathanael Herreshoff, the Goldeneye is an improved version of the Bull's Eye. It provides a small cabin and a self bailing cockpit. She offers many of the same sailing characteristics as the Bull's Eye with a longer waterline and higher keel to length ratio. It's a wonderful boat for gunkholing and short overnight cruising for two people. She offers versatility from sailing with a reef in the main and a storm jib to sailing with a genoa and spinnaker. The Goldeneye has a big boat feel without the common cruising boat hassles.
Drawing on more than 80 years' experience in constructing small sailboats and 35 years' experience in fiberglass, the Goldeneye is built in the same time-proven way as the Bull's Eye, the Marlin, the Atlantic, and the Blue Chip. The outside lead keel is securely fastened with heavy bronze through-bolts. In case of grounding, lead will stand a terrific amount of pounding with small, easily repaired damage. Cape Cod developed a method of molding the hull and deck in one piece. Construction of this type has proven its worth and soundness over the years. The self-bailing cockpit, complete with form-fitting seats, is molded in one piece and is mechanically fastened in the hull. The fiberglass rudder is mounted on a bronze shaft secured at the bottom with bronze casting incorporating the pintle. Woodwork throughout is the finest Burma teak, with Sitka spruce bowsprit. The masthead rig (Zephyr aluminum spar and boom, stainless turnbuckles) and the short bowsprit give a forward triangle large enough to accommodate jibs ranging from a small storm sail to a powerful genoa. There is a permanent backstay and Dacron running rigging. In terms of accommodation, forward are two berths running aft with more than ample storage lockers below each. A space has been set aside for a toilet directly below the companionway hatch, covered with a sturdy top that can double as a step or seat. Beneath the form-fitting cockpit seats are located two large lockers for storage of sails and other gear. The after deck contains a lazarette locker for additional storage or housing for an outboard motor when not in use.
