Roberts Custom - New arrival
SHYLA is a strong, simple, fast and offshore capable steel sloop built in 1981 to a Bruce Roberts design by Dieter Pollack. In fact, this was the first vessel that Dieter built. He is well known as the builder of dozens of steel yachts including the Grahame Shannon-designed Amazon series and also a number of Robert Perry designed cruisers. After completing this boat Dieter sailed it with his family from Ireland to the Canary Islands, Puerto Rico, through the Panama Canal and on to Vancouver, British Columbia. The second owner was a Washington State Park ranger who cared for SHYLA until 2003 when the current owner, a professional mariner purchased SHYLA. SHYLA was refit in 2004 with sprayed foam hull insulation, new interior, and new coatings. Upgrades include a new Volvo engine in 2003 which now has only 420 hours. The standing rigging was replaced in 2005 and running rigging in 2014. New AGM batteries were installed in 2014. Coatings are in excellent condition. With the addition of an autopilot or steering vane, and perhaps some newer electronics, SHYLA is capable or sailing back to Ireland or wherever her next owner chooses to voyage. This is a boat that Bernard Moitessier would approve of. SHYLA is constructed of welded steel to a Bruce Roberts design. The hull has hard chines, an overhanging bow, and reverse transom. A fin keel provides excellent upwind performance and the rudder is protected by a full skeg. The hull and deck are beige and the bottom has black antifouling paint. Non-skid additive is used in the deck paint. A varnished wood bulwark board is secured an inch above the side decks for security. The raised coachroof has stainless steel handrails on each side. Crew are kept securely aboard by stainless steel bow pulpit, stern pushpit and stainless steel handrails completely around the deck. A wire rope lower lifeline is at mid height and there are hinged boarding gates to port and starboard. The cockpit is aft and protected by tall coamings running from the cabin sides aft. A removable teak grate helps drainage and footing on the cockpit sole. A metal propane tank storage box is aft in the cockpit. Cockpit seats measure 5’ 7” long by 15” wide. A large stern storage locker is accessed through a 20” x 20” deck hatch.
