Tacoma

WALLACE FOSS was built by Tacoma Shipbuilding in Washington in 1897, during of the Alaska Gold Rush. Her original design was as a steam powered passenger vessel and she was changed to a tugboat after the hull was built. In 1920 the Foss family purchased the Rouse Towing Company and for the next half-century, the vessel was utilized for towing sand & gravel barges and petroleum barges in Puget Sound, Hood Canal and the San Juan Islands. She is the only tug in the Foss fleet that was in operation for more than 50 years.

WALLACE FOSS was retired from active service in 1972 and is presently her owner’s live-aboard home in Newport, Rhode Island where she is a proud member of the Classic fleet. She is in fine seaworthy condition in all respects, ready for her next venture with owners who can appreciate her functional, traditional charm.
