The Ilex is an iconic Kiwi classic built for the seller's father-in-law, Warwick Macky. She was named after the original Ilex sailed by his grandfather (photos are in the RNZYS clubrooms). The original Ilex was wrecked on Minerva Reef and is a subject of a book. Warwick's brief to Brin Wilson was for a fast family cruiser and that is exactly what he got. Beautifully built in glass over three skin Kauri she features on the RNZYS honours board. Perhaps her most notable win was the "Macky Memorial Trophy". The seller has sailed Ilex in very heavy weather in Cook Strait and can testify to her wonderful seaworthy-ness. She is a superb all weather yacht and full credit must go to her designer and builder Brin Wilson. In over 40 years of extensive cruising and racing she shows no movement in her hull & decks or coach roof. There is no doubt that Ilex is simply "quite special".
