FAIRWIND was purchased in 2008 by a retired English sea captain who has optimized all systems and gear with an eye for seaworthiness, safety, maintainability, and reliability.  With an opus cruise to Alaska completed this past summer, FAIRWIND has been delivered to our docks in Seattle, emptied of personal gear, and made available for her next owner.  See the full specifications for a list of upgrades since 2008 to appreciate the scope of work.

The Celestial 50 Pilothouse is superb pilothouse sloop built in Xiamen China for Celestial Yacht Ltd.  Xiamen is the center of Chinese yacht building with many quality boats emerging from this city including Outbound, Passport, Gunboat, and Nordhavn.  The strong fiberglass hull and deck are finished out with an elegant teak interior with all the comforts of home.  If the idea of being stuck behind the helm of a sailboat on a cold, windy day with spray and rain testing the seams of your foul weather gear is an idea you find less than appealing, then perhaps this pilothouse sailboat should be considered?  Protection from the elements while retaining excellent views is the mantra of this design.  Stand watch and pilot north through the Inside Passage from the inside helm while crew and guest lounge at the large salon dinette with excellent views.  Sail from the protection of the large cockpit with tall bulwarks and full enclosure while running home under a press of canvas outside of Vancouver Island.  Liveaboard comfortably with a huge owner’s stateroom with centerline island berth and ensuite head with tub.

Highlights:

Minimal exterior wood to maintain: varnished teak caprail on cockpit coaming, teak and rubber overlay on cockpit sole and seats – all protected by the full cockpit enclosure.

Deck completely enclosed by double stainless steel handrails for safety; only broken by wire with pelican hooks at amidships boarding gate.  Raised bulwarks on side and foredeck for secure footing.  Stainless steel grab rails on coachroof and pilothouse top and teak grab rails on cockpit table make for extremely safe movement when underway.

Excellent engine and genset access below salon sole allowing access to side, front, and back of engine.  The engine space is painted white, clean, and well lit. The 100 hp Yanmar engine is spotlessly clean and well maintained.  An Aquadrive shaft coupling minimizes noise and vibration.  The Northern Lights genset is enclosed in a sound casing to minimize noise.

264 gallons of diesel along with her narrow, efficient hull make for an impressive motoring range of over 1,000 nm.  Motor from Seattle to Ketchikan without fueling.  395 gallons of fresh water will have the crew showering daily and the watermaker will keep the tanks topped off.

Stern arch with davit for large dinghy and outboard.  The 2011 AB RIB and Honda electric start outboard look almost unused.  The davit system and spreader bar nicely store and launch this gig.  Access from the stern deck via the stairs is very civilized.

The ground tackle is massive, easily deployed and retrieved, and properly secured with hooks and tackle.  A secondary anchor is kept ready to go on the extra bow roller.

The Sidepower bow thruster makes docking a cinch.  Control is with a joystick control at the inside helm (fitted with sliding door to side deck) or wireless remote with holder at the outside helm.

A full complement of electronics including recently installed Raymarine sailing instruments, a venerable Robertson hydraulic autopilot with spare pump, Raymarine chartplotter with AIS, reliable Furuno radar, SSB radio, and multiple VHF’s are all well situated for safe navigation.

Vacuflush heads forward and aft for civilized and sanitary service.

A commercial grade sea water system with large bronze through hulls and massive strainers (clear bowls for inspection) at either end of the manifold independently supply water in case one gets plugged.

FAIRWIND’s interior is bright, elegantly crafted, and easily accessed via a gentle four step companionway to starboard in the cockpit.  Handrails are fixed either side of the companionway and storage bins are below hinged steps.  The interior is masterfully crafted in solid teak and teak veneers.  The teak is coated with varnish and hand rubbed to a satin finish.  Select trim pieces are gloss finished.   Ample handholds, countertop and shelf fiddles are among the thoughtful details found throughout.  Most locker doors are finished with woven cane for ventilation.  The cabin sole is teak and holy with ample access hatches.  The overhead is padded vinyl over marine plywood with teak battens; fully removable for access to deck hardware and wiring.  Overhead dome lights and well placed reading lights are thoughtfully located around all cabin spaces.  Upholstery is a comfortable and neutral beige.

The interior layout is ideal for living aboard or cruising.  The raised salon/pilothouse is just forward of the cockpit and centrally located in the boat.  Forward and down is the galley to port with bunk room to starboard.  A forward head is forward of the galley with access from the passageway or forward stateroom.  Aft of the raised salon is the full beam, very large aft stateroom with ensuite head and shower.  Tanks and engine room are beneath the salon sole.

For those who appreciate light, views, and a protected inside helm, the salon/pilothouse will certainly delight.  Large glass windows surround the pilothouse on three sides providing 270 degree visibility while seated in the dinette.  The “U” shaped dinette is to port and measures 60” long and 31” wide.  A white Corian fixed dinette table is trimmed with varnished teak.  Storage bins are beneath the seats.  To starboard a communications/navigation desk has a hinged top accessing a chart locker.  VHF’s and SSB radios are located at this office/work station.  A hinge-out stool with wood seat is fitted.  The inside helm station is to starboard and forward.  A sliding/dogged side deck access door is outboard.  A bench seat and foot rest provide a great watch standing position.  Engine room access is below the cabin sole thought hinged access hatches.  Four overhead dome lights, two lights with sconces, and a reading light over the chart table illuminate the space at night.  Venetian blinds are fitted to the side windows for dockside privacy.

Main Salon engine access: In addition to the lift up hinged engine and battery room daily use access hatches there is also a removable section of the salon floor. The table is unscrewed and moved to one side. The hatch is visible and can be lifted off by four lift rings. It is heavy for engine noise isolation. Once set securely aside stand up access is available completely around the engine and makes the port side of the engine space more accessible. There is a corresponding over head hatch, weather proofed, that allows complete engine removable with a single lift.  Records show that the hatch was used to replace the engine in 2001.

The galley is located down three steps from the raised salon and to port.  White Corian counters are fitted with fiddles.  Two large stainless steel sinks are aft and fitted with a Delta single lever pull out spray faucet.  Storage cabinets, including “keyhole” dish cabinets are below and above the sink.  Outboard the gimbaled stove/oven is protected with a stainless steel crash bar.  Pot/pan storage is below the stove.  Forward, beneath the Corian counter are huge front opening fridge and freezer.  Two opening side ports, an overhead hatch and abundant lights contribute to an excellent all weather galley.

  • Double stainless steel sinks measuring 10” x 14” x 10 deep
  • Culligan drinking water filter with dedicated faucet
  • Salt water foot pump with dedicated faucet
  • Force Ten three burner stove with thermostatically controlled oven and broiler
  • Goldstar microwave oven
  • Front opening 7.5 cubic foot fridge
  • Front opening 4.5 cubic foot freezer
  • Corel digital thermostats for fridge and freezer
  • Magnetic knife holder
  • Racks on forward bulkhead for storage jars and silverware

To starboard of the galley are two bunks measuring 6’ 7” long by 2’ wide.  The lower bunk is current used for storage.  The upper bunk has a cushion, and reading light.  Storage bins are located beneath and forward of the bunks.  A curtain provides privacy to this space when desired. Two side ports and an overhead hatch ventilate this space.

Entered via a locking privacy doors in the forward passageway or forward stateroom, the forward head is forward of the mast and to port of centerline.   This compartment is molded fiberglass construction and coated with off white gel coat for ease of maintenance and waterproofing.  A varnished teak grating covers a shower pan in the sole.  The shower pan is fitted with a water tight inspection plate for access to the knot meter through hull fitting.  A vanity with integral sink and mirror are forward and outboard.  A shower curtain, mixer valves and hose nozzle are provided for handheld or standing showers.  A vacuflush head is aft of the sink.  A shaving mirror and louvered medicine cabinet are outboard of the sink.  Dome light, sink task light, an opening side port, and solar powered overhead complete this space.  A cabinet to starboard in the forward passageway houses the Bendix washing machine.  Below this are two drawers and above is a wide shelf.

The forward stateroom features a large “V” berth measuring 6’ 3” long by 6’ 6” aft and 1’ 8” forward.  A removable cushion and board infill the “V” for amorous crew/guests.  Storage in this space is copious including: eleven drawers, storage bins below the berth, and a tall hanging locker to starboard aft.  Two reading lights, a dome light, a Hela turbo fan, and overhead hatch and two opening side ports complete this stateroom.

For liveaboards, the “piece de resistance” is the aft master stateroom.  Accessed to starboard of the cockpit companionway and down three steps is a short passageway.  Storage lockers are outboard, below the deck edge in this passage.  A locking door provides privacy to the stateroom.   The centerline, forward facing island berth quickly catches one’s eye and measures 6’ 5” long by 4’ 10” wide.  Curved dressing/reading seats are on either side of the berth.  Long shelves run along the hull sides outboard.  Swing arm reading lights with shades are fitted each side.  An upholstered and padded headboard is secured to the aft bulkhead.  Storage is impressive in a nice collection of open shelves, drawers, cabinets, and hanging lockers.  Air conditioning, two cabin fans, six opening ports, and an overhead hatch provide climate control.  In additional to the two reading lights, three overhead dome lights provide light.  Along the forward bulkhead a small desk with mirrored cabinet and hinge out stool (uses same stool as nav desk) is on centerline.  A tall locker with removable shelves is to port.  To starboard and forward are two huge hanging lockers.

The ensuite aft head is forward to port and entered through a privacy door.  Like the forward head, its constructed of molded fiberglass for ease of maintenance.  A standing/sitting tub with seat is forward and outboard.  Mixer valves and an adjustable shower bar with hose and nozzle allow for flexible showering/bathing.  A vacuflush head is inboard and forward.  A sink with storage below and an Oval mirror above is aft and outboard.  Two opening hull side ports, a removable teak grate, towel bars, dome and task lights complete this space.
