Beautiful, restored Luders 16. Must see to appreciate. Owner has purchased another sailboat and wants her sold. Own a piece of history.

Ariel is a Luders 16 that was originally designed and constructed by the Luders yard in Stamford, Conn. Although her hull number was not found, it is estimated that she was built in 1947. She is a hot molded plywood boat consisting of 5 layers of 1/8 \" mahogany bonded with a highly resistant thermosetting phenol-resin glue that was developed during WWII for the construction of life boats that could be dropped from seaplanes to downed pilots. She appears to be one of the hulls shipped by rail to Newport Beach, Calif. to be finished and outfitted. These Southern California boats were unique in that they had outboard wells built into the hull just aft of the cockpit. Most of these boats, including Ariel, eventually had the wells removed due to the tendency for them to ship water when well healed.

Ariel was discovered by the present owner at the Koehler Kraft yard on Shelter Island, San Diego. She was sitting stripped of all paint and the decks had been removed. The hull and deck house were in very sound condition and all the original rigging, mast, boom and hardware were still with her. The owner and staff at Koehler Kraft proceeded to restore the hull to the current condition by fully coating the exterior and interior of the hull and the deck house with 2 coats of resin, constructed a new deck (fully resin coated top and underside) and new combings, cockpit benches and bulkhead from mahogany. All bright work (interior and exterior) have 2 coats of clear resin and several coats of varnish. The mast and boom were also encased in resin before painting them, the deck and hull with two part LP. This is the same tough application used on airplanes. All rigging was replaced with new stainless steel wire, but the original cast bronze spreaders and fitting were reused. All restoration was performed to original Luders specs. Koehler Kraft is known nationally for their use of resin to preserve and restore historic wooden boats. The cost of restoration was in excess of $30,000.

Ariel was re-launched in July of 2005 and has been sailed out of the San Diego Yacht Club since. Ariel won the award for \"Best Maintained Classic Yacht\" on opening day at the San Diego Yacht Club in 2006.
