Emma Morgan was designed and built by her owners as a long term live aboard cruiser. is modeled on traditional full-diplacement motor sailors, and sailing cruisers of the 1940s and
‘50s. The construction is plank-on-frame using tropical hardwoods from South America, native
white oak and locust, bronze fastened. There is a long flat keel with external lead ballast. The
feathering propeller is well protected in a large aperture with no cut-out in the rudder. The
engine is sized to be able to make useful progress in adverse conditions. The proposed sail plan
would be adequate for moderate to heavy conditions, with the possibility of large headsails for light weather sailing.
and canals as well as coastal and ocean waters. One possible use might have been to sail across
the Atlantic and then cruise the European canals. Thus design and construction focused on
strength and seaworthiness, with some sacrifice in windward sailing ability and ultimate speed.
The cutter rig utilizes a bowsprit for the outer headsail, and a short mast and fully battened
mainsail with an unusually large roach to provide adequate sail area and low center of gravity.
Like a gaff rig, there is no standing backstay; aft-setting shrouds secure the mast, and running
backstays can be used to tension the heastays as necessary. The mast steps on deck in a
tabernacle, allowing the mast to be raised and lowered independent of shore-side cranes. As it is
only 38’ long, it can be carried on deck without overhanging the hull at all, and at a height that
makes it easy to work on deck. The bowsprit can be brought inboard and stowed on deck.
Provisions were made to convert the rig to a traditional marconi rig with keel-stepped mast, should a future owner wish to make that change.
