Hans Christian Traditional 48 Cutter Sail - A CUTTER FOR ALL SEASONS

PUBLISHED JANUARY 2015

The Hans Christian 48 is a timeless design, certain trends come and go, but the traditional beauty, the combination of old world craftsmanship and modern technology, the heavy sea performance and lighter air capability, all go together to make up one of the finest cruising yachts that the past years have produced. These hand laid hulls, with encapsulated ballast, altered forefoot for ease of tacking, high weather deck bulwarks that protect you in times you need protection. The "GOOD NIGHT MOON" is a yacht that has had true love and care by owners that know and appreciate what the proper yacht husbandry can mean when you are a thousand miles from nowhere.

THE HANS CHRISTIAN YARD IS STILL OPERATING IN 2015 BUT PRODUCING ONLY THE NEW HALLMARK 480, THE 48 TRADITIONAL, AND THE 41 TRADITIONAL. THE RUMORED SALE ENDED UP JUST A RUMOR SINCE THE OWNERS OF PANTAWEE MARINE DECIDED TO KEEP BUILDING THE LINE WITH THE ADVENT OF THE NEW HANS CHRISTIAN EUROPE. THIS ADDED A BETTER BALANCE OF VOLUME INCLUDING THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION, A TOTAL NEW MARKET FOR THESE YACHTS. .

"GOOD NIGHT MOON"  has not seen a high degree of cruising water under her keel.  But she has seen enough to say she is fully tried and all deficiencies have been overcome. The one problem with the 48T is the exceptional cut away in the fore foot sections of the vessel. Actually, when Scott Sprague designed this boat, the question came "should we follow the Perry long fin design with skeg hung rudder. After considerable thought, the feeling became that by cutting the forefoot away and leaving the full sections of the keel won the argument. These boat power into a tack with considerable force making them as quick of the lighter long fin peers. Yet, the prop is protected, the sections in the aft stations offer more support, or as we call them, high bustle areas which eliminate a great deal of  the hobbyhorsing found in the more pointed double ended yachts. In reality, this is a true canoe or even a knuckle stern. As the bow raises, the reciprocal action is dampened by the bustle sections in the after sections.

The one downside of this is that when docking in fast tide flows, or excessive wind, the bow falls off quickly. The arrival of the bow thruster quickly overcame this problem and turned into a blessing for many of us who love the 48T. It is also a great steering device if you ever lost your hydraulic system on the rudder. GNM is equipped with such a thruster using a dual prop unit that gives good power when needed. The newer C120 Raymarine three screen Radar system offers multiple functions including AIS. The mast and rigging have been checked by top riggers and show no ware, the teak decks have been replaced on the cabin walkways, and the weather decks still show the original 3/8 inch thickness and have been totally reefed out and re-caked. These decks have not seen a stiff brush in their lives. There is so much more.

As you will see when going over the photos and the specifications on this boat, that it is nicely equipped, and in need of very little. I understand that no single boat meets each buyers needs and

If you are in the market for a true all weather cruiser, then I would recommend you look at Good Night Moon. This is not a distress sale by any means, and buyers who prefer price to quality should really look elsewhere. This statement is made in due respect to all buyers who want to get a boat well under the asking price. I am no different than you but I now my sellers well.

There is also a top area slip that with marina manager approval that can go with the boat if desired.

DESCRIPTIONS OF LAYOUT AND UNIQUE ITEMS:

             COCKPIT:

      •  The cockpit is located in the center of the yacht and easily accessed. The; seating surrounds the cockpit and is Eco metrically designed for comfortable seating. The Radar/chart plotter/overlay/AIS is located on the port side of the cockpit for easy viewing from the helm, yet out of harm’s way. There are autopilot controls at the helm area, and the helm seat is concave to give more comfort. The design is excellent for the single handed helmsman to be able to reach the primary Genoa winches, the traveler to control the mainsheet, and do this all from the helm. The teak is will done and in top condition and the dodger was a product of Harbor Canvas. There are cockpit seats for additional comfort and when heeling, the opposing settee allows good foot rest to secure the crew good position. A well thought out cockpit for the serious sailor. One other thing to remember is that the teak cockpit sole is removable in the case of a need to remove the Generator or the Auxiliary engine. This hatch is well sealed and requires some prying. Sure beats cutting the sole out.
      • HULL TO DECK JOINT AND INITIAL ASSEMBLY
      •   The hull to deck joint is a double overlap with the deck on top of the hull shelf. Prior to marriage of the hull and deck, the sheer teak is fastened on and faired to fit to the cap rail of teak. The station brackets are marked in the mold so there is no chance for variable locations of the bronze backing plates that are laminated in place prior to the final fit. The top of the hull shelf is covered with 3M 5200 sealant and then laid in place. The pre-drilled bolt holes are then installed on a 8 to 12 inch on center basis and taken to medium tension. The sealant is given several days to gut to a harder finish, and then the bolts are given final tension so the the sealant does not get air channels, and forms a perfect and monolithic joint. At this point the cap rail is installed and bolted through the entire hull to deck seam and while this is being done, the chain plates are installed in a monolithic welded grid and bonded to the inner side of the hull by using template guides. This method has been tested since 1980 and we have never had a failure. During the above described process, the hawse pipes, scuppers, port lights, inner mooring horn cleats. Dorade baffles, teak weather decks, Traveler. deck penetrations for all fill pipes and bilge pumps are completed after the teak is complettimes sails are out of

                 DECK LAYOUT:

      • The deck lays out very well for easy access and egress to various parts of the aft and foredeck. The walkways are wide, and the cabin is low in profile which allows easy movement from the cockpit to the aft of forward decks. The walkways are protected by 12inch bulwarks made of hollow formed hand laid GRP laminate. There is a recess molded into the hull that forms the upper half of the hull as it comes from the mold. The hull to deck joint is a double overlap with the deck on top of the hull shelf. Dorade baffles, teak weather decks, Traveler. deck penetrations for all fill pipes and bilge pumps are completed after the teak is completed.
      • GENERAL LAYOUT OF GOOD NIGHT MOON

      • Startomg at the cockpit companion way you will go down a set of bery comfortable angled half circle steps which are one of the few boats that you can feel comfortable coming into forward. The galley will be to your port side, and the navigators station will be to your port side. Aft of the Nav-station is a walkway aft to the master cabin. The first item you will note is the outboard side standing refrigerator which is used a daily cold storage area to keep from opening the Freezer or the chill box. These are two other separate refrigeration system with both having thier own Subzero compressors which will hold a great deal of cruising food. The forward chill box is about 10 cubic ft. with top and front access for efficient storage and access both top and bottom. The freezer is said to be about 8 foot but with the use of the Subzero thin plates, I feel it is several feet larger which means that a lot of frozen food can be taken for long trips, and even microwaveable items for days you do not want to cook.
      • As you move aft, you will see the various items such as generator controls on the inboard side of the walkway, a hart tank tender, and various asundery items. As you pass this, you wil see a heavy teak door with a refrigerator type handle that gives access to the engine room. Opening this door, you will find a insulated engine room that allows good room to access all points. There is a work bench, and below the work bench is the Northern Lights 6KW gemeratpr/ (725 Hrs>). This gige ample power to support the air conditioning systems (which need new raw water cooling pumps due to lack of use in California) the water heater, and with the pumps repaired on the AC units, you will have the reverse air heating system. You will see the Freezer compressor mounted on the work bench at the forward end of the area, you will see the watermarking system which has been maintained by monthly running which produces up to 60 gallons per hour. The inverter is in this can turn 12VDC to 120VDC up to 2000 watts. This unit is installed so that there are two outlets that can be used only, this is a wise plan since many installations let the Inverter turn on all 120VAC items and can draw down the batteries very quickly when you start running the water heater on the inverter. These units were designed for silent power and to not put a light load on the Generator which will shorten the life of this genset quickly. They are ment for misers, hair dryers, small work tools, etc.
      • You will also see the heavy lead foil foam insulation that keeps the engine room at a lower sound decuple level, if you do not think so, open the door to the engine room while everything is running.
      • The next think is the Nanni Mercedes diesel auxiliary engine that produces a maximum of 85 Hp. This engine is a naturally aspirated engine that rates with the top sailboat engines built. Although we have all gone to the turbo and after cooled diesels produced by fine companies like Yanmar, Volvo, Cummins, and others, Engines such as the old caterpillars, the Perkins 4-236 and the Ford Lehman, are all engines that have, with diligent maintenance produced hour time in the 15000 plus range. The Mercedes core engine with the Nanni marinization parts presents a lifetime engine for those who appreciate sand abide by proper yacht husbandry. This engine will offer an economy cruise speed of 6.5 knots and be burning about .075 GPH, and a top burn at 3200 max speed will come close to 9 knots burning 1.5 GPH. Core parts are available through Mercedes, and Marine parts are available through Nanni and multiple other venues. Remember  the olld Mercedes 5-300D's that are still going strong for the last 35 to 40 years with many achiving 350,000 to 450,000 miles.
      • MASTER BERTH
      • Lraving the engine area, and moving aft through the privacy door, you will note the multiple hanging lockers to port side that have extended from the outboard side of the walk through area. The 6 ft. 3 inch head room gives nice access to the master stateroom. You will note the double large berth which is 9 feet long and nearly 11 ft wide at the widest point. There is a comfortible settee located on the starboard side of the berth.  There are storage cabinets surrounding this berth and the AC unit for the aft area is mounted under this berth, with other room for storage The master bath is located forward of the .berth on the port side. There is a large stall shower finished in white ceramic tile that shows no ware or use. The vanity has a hot and cold pressure water systed along with the shower. There is a large cabinet for the TV in the area beteeen the head and the walk through area. The entire area is master craftsmanship teak joiner work and matched teak staving balanced with areas of white such as the overhead and upper cabin sides and overhead. There are opening portlights and a ventilation or escape hatch over the berth area, and the access to the steering is behind the berth and serves as a storage cabinet with removable floors for access
      • GALLEY
      • The galley and navigation center are found with galley to port and the Navigation center on the port side. Thee are there tow regrigerators in the galley, double sink, marble counter topes, Force 10 stove and oben (LPG with safety swith) multiple vabinets and drawer spae, a microwave oven, and good under sink storage.
      • NABIGATORS STATION:
      • The navigation area is a large curved table with good room for chart work. It has removable black Formica type laminate panels where various electronics are stored. There are several dreawrs and a cabinet under the table along with a lift up section of the table for storage of various items. There are spot beam lights that point to the talbe and give light as needed. The custom Bass breaker panel is mounted in this area and all 120 and 12 Volt systems operate from this point. Controls for the autopilot and the radare/plotter are in the cockpit.
      • THE SALON:
      • The salon can be refered to nothing less that a piece of mast craftsmanship, as the entire vessel must be classified as. The port side settee is a beautiful expanded arch shape, and the port settee is a 7 ft berth along with both settees having cabinets and bookshlves above and behind them. The table is teak with fiddles that actually are not launfhing ramps for dishes. The upholstery is in excellent shape and is a dark blue. The reall practical side of the salon is that all of the settees are void of tanks and allow great storage space both in the bottoms and the backs. As in the entire boat, there is a balanve of white and teak tones, and the match teak is not even available as easily as it was when GNM was built.
      • The forward VIP head is located to the port side forward of the salon. It features a great mirrored vanity, electric toilet with ability to use the holding tank or pump overtoard, A large stall shower with ceramic tile and curtain.
      • Avross from the fwd. VIP head is the large hanging lovker and storage area.
      • The forward VIP berth is large and comfortable and offer a large amount of sleeping room. There is storage under this berth as well.
      • The anchor locker is accessable from the divided locker hold all chain and rode.
