Mount Gay Mt. Gay Whitbread 30 - New arrival

World-famous Sticky Fingers, winner of the double-handed Round Great Britain Race, and the very first (Whitbread) 30 ever built, is for sale. Designed by Simon Rogers, this is one incredible boat. Located in South Africa, we will work with you to get this fantastic boat (equipped with trailer) shipped to your location.

It is like being on railroad tracks. Going to weather, Sticky Fingers, a Simon Rogers designed Whitbread 30, tracks brilliantly. It doesn't yaw or wallow in the waves, making an efficient and speedy path to the weather mark. If there is a need for a course correction, the combined keel rudder design makes this almost instantaneous. In essence, one has the responsiveness of a dinghy but the stability of an ocean capable vessel.

At the starting line or out of a tack, the acceleration is impressive. Sticky Fingers is configured with an overlapping genoa and a blade jib which tacks ahead of the swept back spreaders. When the breeze is up allowing for the use of the blade, the tack is so fast that hardly any speed is lost through the tack, and what is diminished is recovered very quickly on the new tack. This gives the tactician a another tool for which to take on the competition.

But as fun as it to go to weather on Sticky Fingers, the off wind legs are a bigger blast. In light air with a masthead spinnaker up, the boat dominates even fifty footers. In winds above 25 knots, the fractional spinnaker generates sufficient power to allow Sticky Fingers to break the waterline barrier, easily hitting speeds in the high teens. The deep rudder set aft in the hull makes it easy to keep her tracking on a plane. Like any boat on a tight reach, the rudder stall and consequent broach is possible. But on Sticky Fingers, if a broach occurs, it is because the helmsman decided to take a nap!

We race Sticky Fingers with a family crew. While she is not a cruiser, Simon designed a comfortable cabin arrangement that has accommodated five of the crew on various weekend regattas. I have owned seven yachts; I am having the most fun on Sticky Fingers and we are accumulating racing trophies.
