William Garden, Vic Franck Center Cockpit/Aft Cabin - New arrival

The design brief to Willliam Garden: a large, protected center cockpit, the ability to see outside from the salon and galley, eight plus knots of speed under power, a separate aft cabin for the kids, and a beautiful, seakindly hull.

She is built by Vic Franck of Port Orford Cedar on bent oak frames with Everlast fasteners. To minimize maintenance, her decks are fiberglass/epoxy over marine grade plywood which is fastened with bronze screws to the frames. All interior spaces are painted white and present a clean, light environment. The cockpit and deckhouse are trimmed with varnished Honduran mahogany. To further enhance the sheltered cockpit, a hard dodger/windshield was installed in 1999 by Jesperson?s Boatworks in Sydney. The 100hp Perkins engine plus ample fuel and water tankage will allow her to cruise forever.

Discovery sleeps six owners and guests in two staterooms. Starting forward is the anchor locker accessed through a door forward of the V-berth. A large, V-berth with infill sleeps two owners. There are reading lights and ventilation is provided through an opening overhead hatch. Storage is in four drawers and a hanging locker. A barometer is mounted on the aft bulkhead. A large head/shower is to port. A shower grating and sump pump, with handheld nozzle allow for showering. There is a stainless wash basin, and mirror.

An aft facing navigation station is to starboard and is equipped with VHF, clock, barometer, and stereo system. There is a large chart table and chart drawer.

Proceed aft and up two steps to the large galley/saloon area. A large dinette is to port with a drop leaf table which lowers to infill the dinette and allows sleeping for two. There are halogen reading three reading lights and four overhead lights. A bulkhead heater provides warmth and ambiance. The galley is to starboard and is equipped with stove/oven, microwave large, double stainless steel sinks, single lever faucet, large refrigeration box, ample storage in drawers and cabinets. An AC/DC switchpanel, hanging locker and electronics are located in the companionway area.

The cockpit is located up two steps from the salon. This large space is very well sheltered by the raised house, hard dodger, and overhead dodger extension. There is canvas to completely enclose this area. Engine access is through the cockpit sole or aft stateroom. The engine space is large and well insulated with superb access to all sides of the engine. Access to the refrigerated space is under the starboard forward settee. A large propane locker is under the starboard settee aft. A colossal storage locker is under the port cockpit settee.

One proceeds aft and down three steps to the aft stateroom. There are two single berths. Lighting is provided by two deck prisms, reading lights, and an overhead light. There is a head, wash basin, and mirror. Storage is in two drawers and two cabinets.
