Laurent Giles Moody 40 - New arrival

Designed by Jack Laurent Giles,Built by Moody on the Hamble in 1965. This yacht was the first in the class, the only one built in wood and provide the plug for the fibre glass versions. She was displayed at the London Boat Show in 1966 where she was awarded boat of the show.

The Laurent Giles Moody 40 is  wooden built motor sailor. She is built in Mahogany on Oak frames. The deck and superstructure are marine ply covered with polyester. This yacht had a major refit in 2012 and is currently in excellent state of maintenance. She had a brand new Perkins M92B diesel engine fitted also in 2012.  The standing and running rigging are from 2007. The main and genoa 2013. New Mastervolt smart charger 2015 and a new Webasto heater in 2013. British registered.

The yacht has many features typical of Laurent Giles and is a small version of his much larger Dorus Mohr design. She has a conventional long keel, a wonderful flare to the bow with that  slight chine worked into the sheer strake and a long overhanging transom stern.

The generous beam gives much space on deck and volume in the cabin and the sheltered midships position, with no step down into the cockpit, is a huge advantage. The current owner came through two gales, while crossing Biscay, without recourse to oilskins. Once reefed all sail operations can be effected from the cockpit.

The cutter rig with roller reefing on genoa and staysail, and slab reefing on the mainsail enable the yacht  to be sailed single handed. While she is no round the can racer she is capable of achieving well over 6 knots under sail. The Perkins Sabre M92HP, installed in December 2011, enables average cruising speeds of over 6 knots to be achieved on passage.

She crossed the Bay of Biscay with ARC Portugal 2014 and was 1 of only 2 boats that did not have to take shelter before reaching Bayonna. The other boat was a 25 year old Nicholson. The average age of our crew of three was 71!

The accomodation provides a sleeping cabin, dressing table and washbasin,  with ensuite shower and heads. Forward there is a v berthed sleeping cabin with heads shower and wash basin.

There is a good sized saloon, forward of the cockpit, with a well equipped galley to starboard, the dinette can be converted into a double berth.

This is a great arrangement  for a family cruising yacht for a couple with occasional guests.

Being equipped to ARC standards this yacht is ready for extended cruising, the recent refit and work carried out by the former owner means that expenditure on maintenance would be minimal. She now has a fibreglass deck and wheelhouse with new windows, the wooden hull was stripped back to bare wood in 2014 and found to be totally sound. Keel bolts and rigging have been replaced within the last 10 years. The mainsail and genoa are new (2012) the Ebersparcher Heater was replaced in 2012.

Salmo Salar is an excellent sea boat ready to follow the example of several of her sisters who have sailed round the world.
