Quickly after stepping aboard JAVA, you realize the ingenuity, quality and craftsmanship behind this custom Ted Hood designed Little Harbor 45.  She is the last and largest of 5 boats designed for her exacting owner.  As each boat was built and sailed through her paces, the design evolved and refined.  JAVA is the end product of decades of sailing experience.  

Hood was commissioned to design a boat with very specific and varied requirements.  The design had to navigate in depths below 5 feet, but be safe enough for ocean passage; it needed to be able to be easily single handed, but have enough space to keep a larger crew comfortable.  It needed to perform cleanly and consistently, and most of all it needed to be a joy to sail.  Hood was successful on all charges and then some, adding speed and elegance to her list of credentials.  Despite being usually desperate qualities in a boat, JAVA is exceptional as a long range or coastal shoal draft cruiser, a singlehanded daysailer, a gunkholer, an ocean racer or PHRF competitor.  JAVA has been a treasured “every boat” for her owner.

JAVA was well built by Little Harbor with a high level of trim and thoughtful installation of gear and systems.  She continues to be in exceptional condition and has received comprehensive maintenance and consistent upgrades since she was new. All original plans and manuals for boat and systems are included.

As you would expect, the deck plan is functional and well laid out, especially for singlehanded sailing. From the cockpit, all sail handling can be tended to quickly and efficiently with an in mast furling and a roller furling headsail. The hydraulic winches, bow thruster, and cockpit navigation instruments make sailing JAVA short handed as comfortable as with a experienced crew.
