Hans Christian 38 Traditional Telstar Cutter

2013 Yanmar 4HJ-5E w/235 hrs. " Warrantee"

2014 Upgraded Leisure Furl In-boom Furling System

Hansel is a Telstar design Traditional 38 Hans Christian . Built in 1986 after the full completion of the new Telstar design, this boat was built to order for the first owner.

 The boat was keenly inspected during construction by the owners designees, and the Hans Christian inspection team. Each step was followed closely and the end result warranted the effort. The yacht was very easy to commission and the owner took great pleasure in his ownership. The original engine was a Perkins 4-154 diesel auxiliary. Certainly one of the highly touted engines of her time, but the new owner of Hansel decided that he would install a new 55 HP Yanmar auxiliary. This step alone resulted in over a 20K investment. Upon taking possession of the yacht, it was shipped to Seattle. After arrival the new engine was installed, the mast was fully stripped and all fittings removed. The mast was coated with primer and then white Linearpolyeurathane high impact paint. All survey items were completed by the yard, and a billing of $ 70,000 dollars was presented and paid. We will go into the full items that this boat has had been done recently (August 2013 to current) in the specification sheet of this presentation. You can be assured that this is the very best vessel of its time from an understanding of the effort that has been devoted to this boat over current and bygone years.

Only once in a great while do we come upon a yacht that has had the care and love devoted to it as had Hansel. The listing broker sold this yacht to the first owner and to the third owner. During this time this yacht has professional care. The finest electronics, the hinged bow sprit allows eas of working on the mast without going up the rig. The l P paint job makes the boat glow; while the inverter and battery systems are top of the line. The upholstery is original but shows like new, and the marble counter tops and accouterments’ in this yacht make it a charming and comfortable while safe living environment. The new Yanmar 4JH-5E, 55 hp diesel was installed upon arrival to Seattle at a cost of $29,000 dollars. The mast was fully stripped and all fittings were removed. It was stripped and primed, then sprayed with multiple coats of LP Awlgrip paint. All fittings were rebidded and the mast was re-assembled. The Leisure furl mast was installed several years before the current owner purchased the boat but was totally gone through by the re-commissioning crew.  The rigging was inspected and found sound with years of service left on it. There is a Delta battery driven angle head drill that is used to convert all the self tailing winches to electric power is desired. It makes pulling a person aloft a much easier chore.

The teak decks were resealed and bungs were replaced, the bottom wad stripped and reprised, twp blisters were found that warranted repair, and two coats of new bottom paint were applied. This is certainly not all that makes this boat a value at the asking price. In most cases when a yacht is purchased you are buying the past owners maintenance systems. This boat has had the best of care. Just add up the amount of money it would cost to duplicate this boat, and you will see that it is nowhere close to the asking price.

 How the 38 traditional Hans Christian differs from the original 38 version prior to 1985 The Hans Christian 38 was first introduced in 1976. The design by Harwood Ives working with company owner John Edwards was an instant success. The original Hans Christians were the 34 and the 36 which were designs by Robert Perry, and started the company in a path that led to the building of nearly one thousand world class cruising yachts. Certain problems existed in the 38T that needed to be overcome. In 1984, John Edwards, with advice from N/A Scott Sprague, worked out an alteration to render a cure the problem of the hard weather helm and initial stability of the yacht. The Telstar became the additional name. The first alteration of the Telstar version was to move the mast forward 12 inches to adjust the lead of the mainsail. The second alteration was to cut away a large section of the underbody and create and skeg hung rudder with massive reinforcement to the skeg which is higher than the keel, but slightly smaller. Upon completion of the underbody section and mast lead change, the initial tests were done with great apprehension since no one knew for sure what the results would be. Upon the return to the dock, there were a lot of smiles upon the crew’s faces. The test was a total success, the weatherhelm was gone, and the initial stability had greatly improved. The stability factor allowed us to go ahead with the Mark II tall rig which also added to the speed of the yacht. Only a few full keel yachts were sold after the introduction of the Telstar, and it became the new state of the art cruiser.

OVERVIEW OF HANSEL

ACOMODATIONS:

ANCHOR LOCKER:

Starting at the bow and working aft, the anchor locker is the first area in the boat. It is divided for chain and rode storage for two anchors. There are teak doors that allow access to the locker to sort out any kinks or glitches in the anchor line and chain. The exact amount of chain and rode are unknown, but in good condition with at least 100 ft. of 3/8 BBB or HT chain and ½ inch rode back up.

FORWARD MASTER BERTH.

The forward berth is actually a full across sleeping flat. It differed on various boats in the 38 T, but the average serious cruisers wished to take advantage of the full amount of room available in the forward VEE section of the boat. If you can let your imagination take over, think of it as a VEE berth with no center section VEE. The reasoning of many behind this was the fact that you can sleep both lateral and/or longitudinal positions. The taller of the berth mates in the lateral position would take the outside. This is quite comfortable when on long passages to weather since you can brace your feet against the leeward side of the hull. In my opinion, I prefer the longitudinal position is the best arrangement since both people can exit the area without having to crawl over one another, yet the Vee section does not require a filler with fiddles to retain the mattress. The sides of the hull are done in teak staving as is the entire interior. The framing of the side shelves and the drawers under the berth are solid teak. There is a step to the starboard side of the drawers to allow easy access to the berth. There are 4 large drawers under the sleeping flat that give ample room for extra storage of clothing et al. There is storage room under the forward end of the berth, and many have used this area to replace the holding tank as in Hansel.

HANGING LOCKERS;

 There are two separate hanging lockers in the area to the starboard side aft of the master berth. These lockers are teak lined with the same staving found throughout the boat. They allow full hanging ability along with shoe storage under the bottoms of the lockers. They are more than ample for a cruising or liveaboard sailing. The doors are solid panel doors with full teak frame and panel inserts.

HEAD;

 The head on Hansel features a stall shower of good size, a teak vanity with hot and cold running water, and a manual head that when not in use is covered with a teak fold down seat that allows easy access to the vanity area. There is cosmetic and sundry item storage behind the sink with sliding doors. All grey water drains into a Strum box with a pump and float switch which is designed to pump grey water overboard.

 SALON:

The salon is a work of art in itself. It is a blend of teak, white and green upholstery the dining area is located to port, and a large dining table is pedestal mounted but not convertible to a double berth. We felt we would rather have good and stable dining table instead of the less sold convertible tables found on so many boats. The reality is that in cruising, the perfect number is three persons, to four. The compression post is in several sections with a post embedded into the ballast with a flange that bolts to the mid section of the brass fascia post with a stainless steel section inside the trim post.

All fiddles are solid teak on the table and the settee. The green velour is in good condition and was the original upholstery. It is amazing the strength and durability of this fabric that we found in use in Taiwan Taxi cabs. The starboard side sports a nearly 7 foot settee that can be pulled out about 7 inches to make up into a large single or cozy double by inserting a cushion. Behind each of the two settees are book shelves and cabinets. Since books are the soul of a cruiser, we felt that this is a very important feature. There is a flat screen TV in this area. The overhead is white grooved plywood. The use of individual planks was soon discarded since climate changes let the planks swell slightly and did not attain the look we desired. The forward bulkhead allows room for mounting mirrors, paintings, or what have you. There is room for a diesel heater to be installed. There is additional storage below the settees and a portion of the after section of the port side settee/dining area is removable to allow full access to the forward end of the engine. The overhead features a teak butterfly hatch that can be opened for excellent cross wind ventilation, but can be sealed well by dog bolts when not open. There are bronze opening hatches around the entire boat for additional ventilation.

The overhead is white with teak capped crown lateral ribs that strengthen the overhead deck area there is a ½ inch air space which provides excellent insulation. All lights are two bulbs equipped which has one red and one white. The red is done for keeping night vision when entering the cabin at night. The cabin sole is teak and holly style with thick teak strips that are individual not veneer plywood. There are several access hatches that allow access to the bilges. The salon presents an artful blend of old world craftsmanship with the new modern efficiency of today’s technology.

 GALLEY:

The galley is highly efficient in Hansel. A near new stainless steel Force Ten stainless steel 3 burner propane stove and oven has had very little use. There is also a broiler in this unit. The galley is built in a aft canting peninsular shape extending to past mid-ship where the stainless steel double deep sink is installed. There is hot and cold pressure running water, two hand pumps of bronze, a water tank vent that drains into the sink rather than being on the outside of the vessel where saltwater can access the tanks in heavy weather conditions. Inboard of the double sinks is the refrigeration compartment. This is about 15 cubic feet and equipped with cold plate modern style plates that operate on a 12 vt. System. There is a top load and front door load access hatches and door. This makes access to the refrigerator much easier than top load only and does not seem to cause any significant loss of temperature.

There are three doors under the tan marble counter top surface. These doors, along with the removable portion of the settee, all work together to make an excellent access to the engine and its components. There is a custom Spice cabinet built on the after bulkhead of the galley, along with dorade vents, newel post that acts as support for the cabin top and an excellent area to grab in active seas. The entire salon, galley, and navigation station also the head are equipped with a hand shaped convex shape teak hand rail that is under the ports at the turn of the deck and cabin. This avoids the more clumsy overhead handles found in many yachts of this type. The purpose is that when the boat is healed over 16 degrees, the centerline rails are hard to reach and tend to pull you into the furniture. Along with the latter, it is also an excellent place to hide the various wire runs that spread around the vessel. The same overhead as in the salon continues into the galley.

 THE PANTRY:

One of the high features that go to make up the whole of the Hans Christian Yachts 38T is the pantry section and counter found on the starboard side of the yacht. There are 4 drawers and a shelved storage area that allow amazing amount of storage for provisioning. The drawers can also be used for spare parts, and more canned goods and tools. This and the companionway stair cabinets are a cruisers dream. The pantry is also an extinction of the galley. The second chef can devise a cutting board to protect the tan marble counter surface, and do food preparation such as chopping and various form of food preparation. Very few yacht galleys allow two persons to work together to prepare a gourmet meal. There are also sliding teak doors outboard of the counter that offer more storage for pots and pans, etc. A cruiser world or day will never appreciate this area until they use it.

THE NAVIGATION STATION;

The nav-station is well designed to accept necessary electronics and instruments. The table is fold up for misc. cruising instruments and charts that are folded. Hansel has a multiple function Radar/chart plotter/ depth sounder/ radar and chart overlay system. One is mounted on the outboard facing surface of the nav station and the other is mounted on the helm pedestal guard. The VHF Radio also has a wireless mike that goes in the cockpit. The Autohelm 7000+ is near new and interfaced into the 0182 sea-talk system. The AP also has a remote selector that can be taken anywhere in the boat for course changes or dodging. The nav-station also has a large storage cabinet and a backless seat allows sitting down while navigation processes are in the works. Under the seat of the nav-station the batteries are located and are accessible for easy checking. There is a large cabinet at the after end of the Navigation seat that allows much more storage.

AFTER BERTH; (Port side)

The aft berth is a double size sleeping quarter. It is about 6’5” deep and about 53 inches across. It is a great berth for you important guests and features a ample hanging locker. The larger of the fuel tanks are located under this berth. While the water tanks, which are new, are located in the center line of the vessel. The second smaller fuel tank is across and can be accessed by the starboard cockpit hatch.

THE COMPANION WAY.

The design of the companionway featured several goals. Make the steps large and at a safe angle. Make them a solid construction so that there is no chance of a small bras holder breaking under weight and causing a bad fall to a crew member and guest. Also make storage compartments on as many steps as possible. The water heater which is a callifor (one that heats from 110VT and engine exchanger) Is installed in the are at the bottom steps, some relocation of batteries is necessary to gain full access to replace the heaterif necessary.

In this presentation I have done my best to verbally present the features of this yacht, and the many other 38 Traditional and Traditional Telstar 38. In many years of working with Hans Christian Yachts, Hansel is the one boat that I can say comes as close to a 10 as reasonably possible. I truly believe that a look at this boat would show you what a world class cruiser should be. Yes, it will need more items to do a circumnavigation, but all the mundane items and electronics are completed. Think of the cost you would have to put into a less expensive yacht to bring it to the level of Hansel.
