Hullmaster 31 Sloop
WILFRED JOHN, a Hullmaster 31, is based on the Douglas 31 which was Ted Brewer's first design after he left Bill Luder's shipyard in 1967 and established Brewer, Wallstrom and Associates, Inc. in Brooklin, Maine. The design is based on concepts Ted formed while working and sailing with Bill Luders on STORM and the Luders 33. The design was also heavily influenced by the Cruising Club of America (CCA) offshore racing rules. As such, they have narrow beams, a relatively heavy displacement, moderate ballast and the graceful overhangs that were prevalent among boats of the era. The result is a beautiful, sea-kindly boat that is initially tender, but which firms up once heeled. Heeling provides more hull in the water, and this additional waterline results in greater speed. This design is given high marks for seaworthiness and sisterships have made several successful ocean crossings and have weathered big storms. History appears to show that Roy Brooks of Hullmaster Boats, LTD acquired one or more of the original Douglas 31 molds when Douglas Marine Craft (the original builder of D31’s) went out of business. Hullmaster built Hullmaster 31’s in Picton, Ontario about the same time as North American Fibreglass Moldings was building D32’s (a slight variation of the same theme). WILFRED JOHN’s galley is equipped with an ice box with 12-volt refrigeration, lots of dry storage, an alcohol stove and a sink. The teak ice-box top doubles as a navigation station. Two full-length berths provide comfortable seating and a strong bulkhead configuration. The forward V-berth, is separated from the salon area with teak doors, providing two private berths. The head is located between the salon and the V-berth. All corners are rounded, and hand rails are conveniently located. Her cabin sole is laid teak plywood bonded to a fiberglass sole and with access ports to bilge, water tank and thru-hull instrument fittings. A drop leaf table, located in the main cabin between the settees, folds up against the forward bulkhead. Her original Faryman Diesel was replaced with a new Atomic 4 gas engine in 2009 and has only 200 hours on it. This is a beautiful classic sailboat that we have known for over seven years. She has always been well-cared-for and shows her gracefulness well.
