Pearson 365 Sloop

OWNER'S COMMENTS: TROPICBIRD is a unique Pearson 365. Only a handful of 365's were built as sloops with Hood in-mast furling systems. This vessel was originally built for La Vida Yacht Charters, and as a special order for a charter company, all ports are opening type with screens. Other unique features are a result of modifications made during repairs of damage caused by a Hurricane in 1981, and improvements over the ensuing years. We have owned TROPICBIRD since 1986, have cruised over 15,000 miles and lived aboard full-time for 14 years. For the past 7 years we have cruised the Maine coast June-September. Age and infirmity (ours not the boat's) have finally forced us ashore. Like all "good old boats" TROPICBIRD is not perfect, but it has been continuously upgraded and well maintained. It will take new owners safely, economically, and in comfort along the coast of Maine or south to the Islands, as it has taken us.

COMMENTS BY OWNER WHO ALSO HAPPENS TO BE A NAMS & SAMS SURVEYOR ON THE GULF COAST:

  • Note 1. Small naturally-aspirated (non-turbo) sailboat diesels do not "wear out". They sicken and die from neglect. In industrial applications these same engines run well over 10K hours before major overhaul. The Westerbeke 40 is a marinized version of a Mitsubishi block, the same as marinized by Perkins as the 4-108. These were probably the most popular sailboat engines of this size in the 70's. The Mitsubishi engine was also used in many tractors and industrial generators. (Many, if not all small marine diesels are marinized blocks built primarily for other service even Yanmar probably makes more tractors than boat engines). Perkins parts can be used on the Westerbeke, and I have gotten a Massey-Fergusson tractor (Mitsubishi) water pump that is identical to  the  Westerbeke.
  • A universal "feature" of the Westerbeke 40, Perkins 4-108, etc. is a "rope" rear seal that leaks a small amount of oil. The seal can be replaced and may stop the leak, but the experience seems to be that it will return in a few hundred hours. Ours has leaked approximately the same amount of oil for 28 years. The mechanics I have discussed this with feel that replacement of the seal is not worth the effort/expense. Check the oil every day before running, add when necessary, and use an absorbent pad to keep oil out of the bilge.
  • Note 2. Many spares were parted from another W-40 (with damaged cylinders but otherwise good) obtained in 2003.
