 Design

Endless faith.......

The silver stater of Tarentum (400 B.C.) on the left, symbolizes the unselfishness of dolphins, evidenced by the many human lives they saved.

The brain structure of dolphins is unique. Dolphins have a special sonar sense, and their hearing is better than that of any other animals. This makes them skillful navigators.

Similar to those ingenious creatures called dolphins, the solid and safe Kineo 27’ has a comfortable and ergonomic design. Its hydraulically controlled features, its clear operating panel, its perfect sound installation and its recessed cleats are only a few examples. The sophisticated grey colored leather seats are made by De Sede, a Swiss first-class manufacturer.

Form follows function......

That fortune sense of awareness. The requirement of high performance was the starting point for the design of the Kineo 27’. This resulted in a boat which excels. Both literally and figuratively, as dolphins do. The sophisticated motoric characteristics and the phenomenal exterior ensure optimum maneuverability, flexibility and immediate response.

Even the texture of the Kineo 27’ bears resemblance to the elastic skin of dolphins, which allows them to easily adapt to pressure differences in rapid water and waves. Frictional resistance of the Kineo 27’ was kept as low as possible.

That timeless feeling, where speed is not a volatile experience comes to life. Rather, speed is an intense feeling of power, flexibility, balance and excitement. With all our senses on alert, we are headed for the ultimate sensation, a full awareness of freedom, brought about by the smooth blending of mother nature and technical sophistication.

The Kineo 27’ parallels the original perfection of dolphins in all its different aspects....

 History

The story of the Porsche Kineo 27’ Powerboat started with the Austrian entrepreneur Horst Stross who initiated the project together with F. A. Porsche Design in the late 80's. His aim was to build a unique offshore racer and therefore engaged powerboat specialist Fabio Buzzi and the submarine specialists of ThyssenKrupp Nordseewerke (the builders of the famous present German submarines) for the realization of this project.

After initial tests with original Porsche 928 engines, the engineers decided to install two powerful MerCruiser performance engines with 7.4 liter volume each to bring the boat to a top speed of 69 nautical miles. Only the best materials from the submarine industry, such as Kevlar, Carbon Fiber and Airex were used, as well as high-end (VDO) instruments, fittings and materials.

During the entire design and construction phase engineers from Porsche Design made sure the high quality and design standards were met. Truly you can say the high standards and sophistication used in the submarine industry can be found back in the Porsche Kineo 27’  Powerboat.

Three prototypes came to completion as pilot versions and have been carefully recommissioned to full elegance and power. After more than 25 years of dormant, one of the three has been brought back to life again, a truly unique boat which will fascinate every Porsche and offshore powerboat enthusiast.

What’s the reason for not taking the Porsche Kineo into production? To cut a long story short, serial production would have be too expensive. Porsche Design spent over $ 4 million in developing the prototype and after thorough calculations, the price for a serial produced Porsche Kineo would add up to roughly DM 750.000,- in 1993. This is equivalent to about $ 1.3 million in 2014! After introduction on the prominent Boot ’93 exhibition in Düsseldorf, Germany and advertising a price of DM 621.000,-, Porsche Design did not receive one single order for production and therefore the whole project was stopped.

Two prototypes ended up being stored in a ThyssenKrupp facility in Emden, Germany and the other prototype was kept by the Austrian entrepreneur Horst Stross who initiated the whole project in the first place. His Porsche Kineo was also the only one with Porsche 928 engines, later replaced by another engines, because the Porsche engines were not capable of producing enough power. The other two prototypes were originally equipped with MerCruiser 454 engines, fitting the boat much better and producing more than sufficient power!

But don’t be fooled; over the past years unauthorized and thus fake Kineo’s have been built in the USA, however these Kineo’s are produced with GFK hull materials, which makes the boat much heavier compared to the original prototypes, weighting over 3.500 kilograms. As a matter of fact the 3 original Kineo’s were never officially sold at all and stayed in its prototype stage, now owned by fanatic collectors. Yet the dramatic changes made to the other two prototypes makes this one the only original Porsche Kineo around!

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche (11 December 1935 – 5 April 2012), nicknamed "Butzi", son of  Ferry Porsche, grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, was a German designer whose best known product was the first Porsche 911 and the Porsche Kineo 27’ Powerboat.

While his grandfather and father were engineers, he was more involved into working out the appearance of a product. He never thought of himself as an artist or designer, but more as a technically talented craftsman in shaping. After the family decided to change the company's legal form and to keep the family out of its management in 1971, Ferdinand Alexander founded his own industrial design company, Porsche Design, in Stuttgart, Germany, which was later moved to Zell am See, Austria, where the Porsche family owns an estate called Schüttgut.

Kevlar is the registered trademark for a para-aramid synthetic, related to other aramids such as Nomex and Technora. Developed at DuPont in 1965 this high strength material was first commercially used in the early 1970s as a replacement for steel in racing tires. Typically it is spun into ropes or fabric sheets that can be used as such or as an ingredient in composite material components.

Currently, Kevlar has many applications, ranging from bicycle tires and racing sails to body armor because of its high tensile strength-to-weight ratio; by this measure it is 5 times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis. It is also used to make modern drumheads that hold up withstanding high impact. When used as a woven material, it is suitable for mooring lines and other underwater applications.

Carbon Fiber reinforced polymer or carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP or CRP or often simply carbon fiber), is an extremely strong and light fiber-reinforced polymer which contains carbon fibers. The polymer is most often epoxy, but other polymers, such as polyester, vinyl ester or nylon, are sometimes used. The composite may contain other fibers, such as Kevlar, aluminum or glass fibers, as well as carbon fiber. The strongest and most expensive of these additives, carbon nanotubes, are contained in some primarily polymer baseball bats, car parts and even golf clubs[1] where economically viable.

Airex core materials are manufactured into very light and yet rigid sandwich panels in combination with two outer skins. The core material distinguishes itself as an easy-to-process material which demonstrates specific attributes such as high strength and stiffness, fire and temperature resistance, temperature and acoustic insulation, resin absorption and many others.

VDO (Vereinigte DEUTA (Deutsche Tachometerwerke GmbH) OTA (OTA Apparate GmbH)), is a manufacturer of information and cockpit systems, navigation, telematics, communication and audio systems, and control and fuel systems for industrial and professional use.

The company was founded by Adolf Schindling at the end of the 1920s in Frankfurt, Germany by joining DEUTA and OTA. The company made and continues making speedometers and instrument clusters for passenger cars and commercial vehicles.

Furthermore, the technology of the hydraulic system was taken from the submarine industry. ThyssenKrupp, known for building high quality submarines, actually was responsible for manufacturing the Kineo. Their extensive knowledge of building high quality submarines has been used to manufacture the Kineo. Using the highest quality electric, hydraulic system and most durable materials. The cabin door, anchor hatch, swimming platform and sunbed extension are operated hydraulically, something you won’t find in any other sports boat around. Both cockpit dashboards, the switches and electrical wire systems are directly take from the submarine industry.
