F-Class Racing Sloop - New design

The F class is the result of a long research project by the Hoek Design office, developing fifteen different yachts with varying length, beam and displacement, sail area and draft. Goal was to develop the smallest possible yacht with the above water looks of a J class yacht that would be faster at all points of sail. F02 will be built by Claasen Shipyards, most recently responsible for the build of F01 Firelfy and J class yacht Lionheart.

With long overhangs and sleek lines, F02’s exterior styling is similar to Js such as Svea. A sweeping sheer with a flush deck and moderate deck camber echoes the look of yachts that were developed in the early 1930s. Below the waterline, however, she is more comparable to a modern maxi racer with a high aspect ratio, T-style fin keel with a lead bulb. The combination of a 5.2 m draft with a 30-tonne lead bulb and carbon high aspect ratio spade rudder is exceptionally powerful. Nonetheless, F02 can be effortlessly steered with two fingers.

The deck layout is comparable to a modern maxi with a large open cockpit and separate cockpit for the helmsman. On deck and in the interior, the yacht is developed as a pure sailing machine with a minimalist interior with pipe cots forward of the mast, a stall shower and separate toilet, locker space for all the crew, a small galley and a navigation table. The inside of the hull is insulated with a spray insulation system called Mascoat ΔT and Δ dB. The hull is lined with red cedar planks spaced one inch apart with red cedar floors, aluminium striping and composite grating. Decks are made in Alaska Yellow Cedar to reduce weight.

Technical advancements

F02’s technical systems are very advanced.

F02 is designed with a fixed keel with a draft of 5,2 meter, although class rules also allow for yachts with a lifting keel. The T-style keel has a duplex fin that is bolted on to the aluminium structure. The aluminium structure inside the hull is milled out of a solid aluminium piece creating frames and longitudinals to support the very high aspect ratio fin keel. The lead bulb is bolted on to the duplex fin.

The main engine is a Steyr 6-cylinder driving a feathering  propeller and IFG generator, while a 4-cylinder Steyr engine drives an IFG generator and hydraulic pump. All sailing systems are hydraulic with Harken winches and Lewmar deck gear.

The rudder is completely built out of carbon fiber with a large diameter, rudder bearing and carbon rudder stock.

The spars are built by Hall Spars in Breskens, The Netherlands with a carbon fiber box boom, carbon spreaders and composite rigging. A full set of 3DL en 3DI carbon racing sails complement the high-tech rigging package.
