G.H. Stadel Gaff Rigged Pilot Schooner

OUTWARD BOUND, a George Stadel-designed gaff-rigged pilot schooner, was built by Whittier & Low of Ipswich, MA in 1948. The vessel was rebuilt by the current owner between 2000 and 2004. The boat has had a recent survey, and is in excellent condition. The Perkins engine was rebuilt in 2002 and has only 100 hours on it since the rebuild.

Outward Bound was the winner of the "Fisherman Schooner Race Cup" in Gloucester, MA in 1971.

The sale includes a beautiful Norwegian wooden pram, built in 2007, as well as a great deal of the gear necessary for cruising.

OUTWARD BOUND, designed by George Stadel, was originally built in 1948 in Ipswich, MA. Stadel, a noted designer was known for his wholesome sail boat designs, created OUTWARD BOUND as a 36-foot on deck gaff-rigged pilot schooner.  The current owner has put a significant amount of restoration work into the vessel, and much of the hull structure is new as of 2004.

The vessel has a model bow; full keel; elliptical, counter transom; cambered deck and keel-supported rudder. She has an inboard auxillary engine. The boat has recently been surveyed and received a good report of her condition.

Construction:

The keel, frames, floor timbers, deadwood and stern post are white oak. Stringers are 2" x 4" Douglas fir. Planks are 1 1/4" Southern yellow pine. Deck beams and carlis are white oak.  the deck is made of cedar. Butt blocks are made of locust. There are 5 stainless steel floors under the engine. Planking is copper riveted and the seams are caulked with cotton. The ballast keel is cast iron and the boat also has lead ingots for ballast.

On Deck Construction:

Rubrails are mahogany topped with bronze rub bars, commencing approximately 5' aft of the stem and extending aft to approximately 18" forward of the transom, at the gunwale. The boat also has bulwarks with a a 4" wide cap rail.

Propulsion:

NEW 2012 Prop: Michigan 17" x 11" right had-turning, 3-blade bronze propeller on a 1 3/8" stainless steel propeller shaft

Steering: Edson worm gear

Engine: Perkins 3108, 50 hp (4632.06 engine hours) Serial number suggests year is 1979 REBUILT AS NEW 2002 with only 100 hours on it since rebuild.

Transmission: Hurth 2:1

Systems:

The boat is wired for 12 volt service

There are two diesel tanks, one forward that is shared with the diesel heater and one aft.

There is a marine head and holding tank.

Rig:

Bowsprit and foremast are solid yellow pine. Main mast is solid douglas fir.

Each mast is fitted with one set of spreaders. The standing rig is stainless steel and was replaced in 1998.

Sail inventory: mainsail, foresail, staysail, furling jib, hanked jib, 185% genoa, topsail, Fisherman staysail, all manufactured by Nathaniel S. Wilson Sailmakers except topsail by Sperry.

Running rigging was replaced in 2004.

Turnbuckles are open bronze.

Interior:

Located forward is the forepeak/sail locker, followed by the crew berth and the port side head, the galley, centerline auxillary engine, port and starboard side quarter berths and a lazarette aft.

Dinghy:

Purchase includes beautiful 2007 Norwegian wooden pram, 9'6" x 4'
