Aphrodite 101 - New arrival
A great boat in terrific shape. Updated survey (April 2012) available to potential buyers. Priced to sell quickly! From a very happy Owner of another Aphrodite 101.
Thanks for writing back. We love our boat and have many satisfying cruisesto remember and many trophies on our mantle. Our story may assist you as wehave had the boat for many years and kept a sailing blog. The first thing is to understand why the boat was designed. Paul Elvstromwanted a boat to win the Around Denmark Race. The Six Meter, then thepinnacle of small yacht design, was one part of the model Elvstrom had hada lot of success with the Soling (to put it mildly). The designer, JanKjaerluff, put a lid on a Solingized Six Meter, called it an Aphrodite 101,and won a number of races. The design was unstoppable until Neils Jeppsencame out with the X 99. The A 101 stayed popular with almost 500 built. There is a pretty good web site devoted to the boat as you know. The boatwas not designed to the IOR but rates about 3/4 ton level. Our son is a marine professional and worked on a Seattle boat, Kestrel, who's owner said the boat will go anywhere in any conditions. We latercorresponded with Jim Binch who owns Killua on Marthas Vineyard and hasraced to Bermuda a few times. The boats are seaworthy! That is ourexperience as well. We race successfully in various short-handed events. Ithink the boat is at her best in races with long legs as opposed to closequarters windward leeward courses. When we bought our boat, originally Best Revenge, the club members came tohelp us prepare for departure all saying thank goodness the boat wasdeparting, they'd get a chance at trophies. We sailed Averisera fromStratford CT (mid-Sound) to Boston during a three-day storm and were verycomfortable. We later raced in very light air in Boston using our class jib(PHRF-NE 141, comparable to a C&C 34 with a genoa). We do pretty well evenin light air, especially if there is a chop. Our weak point is powerreaching, 60 to 100 degrees off the wind. The class jib is too small and wecan't carry a kite. We have raced once against an Abbott 33 which beat us.It was a 75 nm DH race. Frankly, I blundered tactically and the Abbottsailed away from us on the long off-wind leg. We sailed boat for boat fromNewport to Block Island and then I screwed up. Abbott 33 is PHRF-NE 126 asis the Tartan 10.
