Buchanan Yawl

1962 Buchanan yawl, 49 ft.  Built in teak to Lloyds 100A1.  A rare and outstanding yacht, ready to sail.

Alan Buchanan designed some of the most attractive yachts of his period and this is surely one of the very best. 
Built by Mashford Bros, Plymouth for the previous owner in 1962 to Lloyds 100A1 specifications. She has been maintained in Class.

The design is typical of her period with full keel, cut-away fore foot to reduce wetted surfaced areas, gently raked rudder hung at the aft end of the keel, long external lead ballast keel, elongated spoon bow, a very elegant but not exaggerated counter stern and a generous beam. 

Planked in teak all copper and bronze fastened to oak frames and timbers. 
Lead keel, bronze bolts last drawn 2004 survey. 
Heavy galvanised steel strap floors. 
Timber rudder on bronze stock and tube. 

Solid, yacht-laid teak deck. 
Varnished teak coach-roof, raised to a dog-house aft. 
Self-draining cock-pit with teak gratings. 
Wheel steering on bronze pedestal with Mathway rod and gear linkage. Emergency tiller. 

Bermudian yawl rig on gold anodised, aluminium masts stepped through the deck onto the back-bone. 
Stainless steel standing rigging with bronze rigging screws to galvanised chain plates. 
Twin standing back-stays to the quarters 
Runners on bronze Highfield levers 
Mizzen runners also on Hoighfield levers. 
Profurl roller gear on stemhead jib. 
Self-tacking boomed staysail on quick release lever inboard fore deck. 
More recent main boom with telescopic kicker. 
Halyard and reefing pennants led back to the cock-pit. 
2 pairs of original bronze mast halyard winches. 
Twin pole tracks up the forward face of the mast with lifts etc. Poles stow vertically up the mast. 
Slab reefing mainsail fitted with Dutchman self-stow system (thin strings threaded vertically through the sail so the sail drops down the strings in full control and stows inself on the boom. 
Genoa on profurl stemhead roller furling gear. 
Spare main and genny. 
Staysail, Mizzen, mizzen staysail, spinnaker. Storm jib sets on separate mast track. 

Perkins MD4236 70hp diesel engine. Fresh water cooled. 
Single lever Morse controls. Conventional shaft drive to fixed 3-blade prop. 
Belt drive off the front of the engine to hydraulic windlass pump. 

12v electrical cuircuits with 4 x 12v batteries in sealed boxes.

The interior is divided into a forward owner's cabin, a saloon cabin and the the dog-house area with quarter berths. 

From forward, chain locker with glazed high level bulkhead door. 
Fore cabin with generous port and stbd berths. 
Varnished teak fore hacth above. 
Stbd side passage aft tothe saloon cabin. Heads compartment to port with sea toilet, porcelain hand basin with pull-out shower head, H&C. Shower curtain. Shower drains into a tray with teak grating. Tray can be simply lifted out and emptied into the heads keeping systems very simple and fool-proof. 
Lockers to stbd. 

Saloon cabin with over 7' head-room.

Fine, drop-leaf gimballed teak table.

Upholstery all replaced recently in Cork in dark blue leather in superb condition. 
Belco stainless steel charcoal cabin heater on the fwd bulkhead with Dutch tile surround. 
Galley across the after end against a half-height bulkhead. 
Australian Broadwater stainless steel 4-burner gas cooker, glass door to the oven, stainless steel bruners. 
Twin stainless steel sinks with H&C + manual cold water pump. 

Stbd side passageway steps up to the dog-house area. 
Engine under, excellent access to the bilge and engine, panels under the galley sink remove to access the front of the engine. 
Large chart desk to port with instrument display above, all open top the saloon below. 
Port and stbd quarter berths under the side decks. 
Centre steps to the cock-pit. 

Twin fresh water tanks each side of the saloon cabin drain to a centre tank under the sole totalling approx 70 gallons. Pressurised water supply. 
Hot water calorifier off the engine cooling system. 

very fully equipped including Garmin chart plotter, Garmind hand held GPS, Simrad wind, depth, speed with digital display at the wheel and repeaters at the chart desk. Simrad auto-pilot. Icom VHF. 
Twin life rafts, EPIRB fire extinguishers, life buoys, Garmin MOB. 
Avon inflatable dinghy, Suzuki outboard engine, cock-pit table, awning and covers. 
Torkmaster hydraulic windlass, ample chain, pair of CQR anchors. 

This is a rare and outstanding yacht, exceptionally pretty, all teak, two owners only frm new, very manageable by two but space for a good party. Tidy and ready to sail. Last survey 2004.
