HISTORY FROM GEORGE WHISSTOCK:
The second Deben 4-tonner to be launched after the war.  The first was Saskia, launched in August.  It is likely that she was one of the two boats started in 1939 (built for stock) but completed after the war.  These were originally numbered Yard No. 126 and 127.  Nos. 128 through to 319 were pretty much all wartime boats for the Admiralty.  So it is not unreasonable to think that she was originally no. 127 and Saskia was originally 126.

With regard to internal ballast, they were not specifically designed to have any.  However designs in that period usually made an allowance for some trimming ballast.  And also the original design didn’t have an engine so this will have changed the trim.  ¼ ton sounds about right but it’s not so critical.  You just want to have her trimming nicely fore and aft and reasonably on her marks.  Design draught was 3’6£ (1067mm).  You can always add a little more later if she seems a bit tender.  It is best if the pigs of ballast can be secured in a tray or similar on the top of the wood keel.  Nowadays, internal ballast is secured in case of inversion but I don’t think we need to worry about that too much with the Debens!   But it shouldn’t be able to move about at all and it shouldn’t rest directly on the hull planking.

OWNERS COMMENTS:
“CORAL II” was lying in Aldeburgh, Suffolk.  She was completely re built 2009/2010 and has been yard maintained since (R. F. Upson).  New fastenings, keel bolts, corking, deck, rigging, sails, engine, electrics, running rigging, fuel tank, pumps, etc etc.  Taken back to wood inside and out and repairs carried out as specified in the survey.

Over the last three years she has been completely rebuilt at a cost of, in excess of £35K.
