Gannon & Benjamin Marine Railway Sloop
CANVASBACK was built in 1984 by the masters of wooden boat construction, Gannon & Benjamin on Martha's Vineyard from a design by Nat Benjamin. She is at once wholesome and elegant. True to the definition, she is a day-sailer, with a wonderfully large and comfortable cockpit. She is meant to leave her mooring, enjoy a brisk day on the water, with perhaps a packed lunch underway, anchor close enough to wade ashore to the beach. Then enjoy an afternoon sail back and be nicely put away on her mooring at day's end. Does it get much better? Design #1, Nat Benjamin, Martha's Vineyard. External Lead Ballast: 1,800 lbs, est. Inside Ballast: 1,000 lbs. Oak backbone and frames, Cedar planking, Bronze fastened. Dynel deck, Spruce spars (Solid). Mainsail and Jib: Nat Wilson 2003, (Not used between 2005 - 2010). Sail covers and Mast Boot: New 2010. Canvas Winter cover. Standing Rigging, including Bobstay, by Myles Thurlow, 2012. Compass in binnacle: 2010. Spars wooded: 2012. Bottom wooded: 2013. Danforth Anchor and Rode. Boat hook. Two sweeps. Running back stays.
