Crocker Cutter

Patience is an extraordinary sailing vessel - classic, elegant, superbly built and exceptionally well-maintained. She is a very able and responsive sailer. She has a straightforward, well-balanced rig. She has clean lines and has not been gussied up with the usual stanchions, lifelines, dodgers and sprayhoods that can detract so greatly from a fine vessel’s appearance. She has a large, comfortable cockpit that is ideal for sailing with friends or entertaining. Below decks, her colors are warm and rich, beautifully varnished mahogany and pine throughout, and caned lockers that let the air circulate and keep things fresh. She is unusually roomy for a 30’ boat and most everyone who sees her guesses she is 34’ or 35’ feet instead of 30.’ She has two cabins with a head and hanging locker between and a galley that spans the width of the boat. She is a work of art, every inch of her construction carefully considered and built of the finest materials. She is refined, yet not averse to an exciting sail in a good breeze. Sails trimmed neatly and heeling to the wind, she surges ahead in unmistakable joy! She is most at home in her old stomping grounds along the coast of New England, exploring new harbors, visiting old haunts. And her name suits her too – Patience! She teaches those who sail aboard her – patience – enjoy this moment, this Sunday sail, take your time, don’t hurry the voyage preparations or chafe at changes of plan wrought by unexpected shifts in weather. Take pleasure in the slow and loving care with which you’ll put her away for the winter and commission her again come early spring, or the patience of sitting in a quiet room looking out the window at winter while writing up the log of a season’s adventures to share with friends and family or the broader family of wooden-boat enthusiasts. Make no mistake about it, Patience has a following, the most fervent among them those who have had the privilege of owning her and caring for her firsthand. So, once you’ve seen her and fallen in love, and as new skipper set sail, keep her name as it is – Patience – so that we might know her future as we’ve known her past and observe on a summer’s day, “Ah, there she goes, bound for Cuttyhunk!”

Patience was built by Mountain Boat Works (Mark Mahoney) in 1984. She was three years in the building and reflects extraordinary skill and patience. The materials used were of the highest grade and this is confirmed by her lack of deterioration over the years. This lovely little cutter is in beautiful condition inside and out.

Sam Crocker designed her and, if you look in the Crocker designs book, she is similar to Old Butch. Sam Crocker himself advised Mark Mahoney on matters of construction and rigging. Patience was launched in 1984 and has had very caring owners ever since. To duplicate this boat today would be prohibitively expensive. Estimates I've been given by boat builders on her replacement value run around $500,000.
