Abeking & Rasmussen S&S Ketch

TOREA’s design was inspired by Irving Johnson’s S & S ketch, “YANKEE”, which was well documented in numerous National Geographic articles of his world-wide passage making.

While based on YANKEE’s design, TOREA features many improvements with more beam and full keel vs. centerboards.  She enjoys perhaps the best pedigree in sailing auxiliaries; the combination of a classic Sparkman & Stephens design coupled with superb workmanship from Germany’s Abeking & Rasmussen, one of Europe’s finest yards.

Her classic lines and clipper bow are admired wherever she voyages.  In 1988, the original rig was replaced with in-mast furling main and mizzen, with the main mast height increased for better light-air performance.

TOREA’s design offers unusually wide beam compared to other sailing vessels of the same vintage; the result being a very spacious interior. She features a large mid-cockpit protected by a low profile fixed dog house forward.  A companionway leads down aft to the great aft cabin with large berths port and starboard, private head with separate shower stall and adjacent nav station with chart table.  The mid-engine room underneath the cockpit can be accessed through doors from the aft stateroom or the galley area forward.

A companionway leads down forward from the cockpit to the sea-going galley to starboard and a large settee/dinette opposite to port. Going forward is a double guest stateroom to starboard with lower twin berths and private head.  To port is a day head with access to the forepeak cabin with upper/lower berths port and starboard.
