The first six Nautor Swan 48’s were delivered to Wisconsin at the Palmer Johnson “PJ” yard.  Thus the name PJ 48. They were finished and rigged at PJ. It’s hard to find a boat more beautiful than the Swan PJ 48. This design is reputed to be Olin Stephen’s all-time favorite design.

Panther has had the same owner for 34 years. This knowledgeable yachtsman has maintained Panther and nearly everything on the boat has been replaced twice. This includes all pumps, solenoids, electrical fixtures, faucets, water heaters, mufflers, props, cutless bearings, heat exchangers, starter motors, oil coolers, belts, hoses, impellers, fans, heaters electronics, etc. As with many Swans of this era, the teak decks are worn and need of replacement, or better yet removed with non-skid added glass deck. Panther is a ruggedly built boat and is an excellent platform for a family or yachtsman who wishes to own yacht of this caliber and size at an affordable price.

Panthers’s two enclosed cabins and two head layout handily sleeps up to 9 people.

Entry at the companionway is across the cockpit bridge deck and down 6 easy steps. A surprising light and welcoming interior awaits. The interior wood on Panther is Koto, a lighter blond wood from West Africa. Only six of the Swan 48’s received this interior wood. This light clear grain wood is beautiful. In June of 1995 Panther’s entire interior was re-varnished. Though not new, the interior wood shows well for a boat of this vintage. The floor is teak and holly. The ceilings are teak slats outboard. The overhead headliner is an off white with teak trips. Overhead interior lights have been retrofitted with LED lamps. The interior arrangement with a galley at the foot of the companion way to port, Nav table to starboard, V berth forward and large aft cabin is a proven layouts found in modern boats today! The Swan’s quality is timeless.

The Forward Cabin is a V-berth arrangement with split bunks side to side and a bench seat between.  An i-fill can be put in place to make for one large double berth. Copious storage can be found under the berth to port and starboard. Forward of the bunk, is open to the forepeak giving access to chain locker and windlass motor. Varnished teak ceiling slats line the sides. Overhead is a large sliding hatch. There is a built-in removable ladder on the aft part of the bulkhead in the cabin, giving access to above. It also serves as the vessel boarding ladder. To starboard and aft is a vented hanging locker. Additional storage is found under the small bench seat that divides the bunks. Flip open reading lights and overhead lights provide illumination. There is also an abundance of light from the large overhead hatch as well.

Moving aft is a short hallway with the Forward Head to port which can be isolated from the main salon and the forward state room by two sliding pocket doors. Thus the forward head becomes an ensuite head for the forward stateroom. In this area are two large vented hanging lockers on the starboard side. The forward head is opposite the lockers to port. The head has a built-in sink with pressure h/c water. The sink nozzle pulls out to make a shower. The floor has a teak grate with drain and sump below, which can be pumped out. There is abundant storage with 2 large cabinets outboard, a top loading compartment to the left of the sink, and storage under the sink as well. The toilet is a Jabsco manual head with ceramic bowl. Natural interior light is provided by the overhead deck prism and 12 volt lamps.

Moving aft is the spacious Salon. The salon table is offset to port. This solid teak table has drop leafs and a lift off cover with storage for glasses etc below the table top. The C-shaped dinette settee provides seating for 5 or 6 people on the Port side. The settee itself is 9’ long. The space under the settee is entirely storage. Behind the settee back is more storage. Above and outboard on the port side is a 6’4” pilot berth with a large cabinet forward. On the starboard side is a 6’4” settee with a large bank of 10 drawers just forward of the settee. Above and outboard is another 6’4” pilot berth with a large cabinet forward of that. Under the port settee can be found house and start batteries along with mechanical systems such as refrigeration compressors and various water pumps etc. The space provides excellent access to these systems. Flip up reading lights, an overhead hatch, and overhead lights provide illumination in the salon. Teak and holly floor board lift up, providing access to the trim tab mechanism and the stainless steel tanks.

The Galley is to port and just aft of the port side dinette settee. As a proper galley should be, this one is located at the foot of the companion way on the port side. This gives easy access for the cook to provide warm food and drink to the watch standers above. The galley has a good size dual stainless sink with hot and cold pressure water. A foot pump provides salt water as well. The top loading refrigerator/freezer is outboard of the sink and is large with lots of space for provisioning refrigerated and frozen items for the long haul. This is an efficient galley as the refrigerator top serves as counter space. The 3 burner force 10 propane stove is just aft of the refrigerator compartment. As is the theme on Panther the galley has excellent storage space including large sliding door cabinets outboard, big space under the stove for pots and pans, a smaller cabinet on the aft bulkhead and another good sized cabinet under the sink.

The Navigators Station sports a proper forward facing table which is large enough to spread out a chart. As with most nav tables the top lifts up with a deep storage space under. Five drawers are just under the nav table accessible inboard. The DC and AC breaker panels and interior electronics are all within easy reach of the navigators seat.

Moving aft is the Master Stateroom. This enclosed cabin is surprisingly large. The layout has a double berth on the port side and a single to starboard. A bench seat, large enough to seat two, separates the bunks. Just aft of the bench is a top loading freezer. A book shelf rests just above the freezer. Forward of the starboard single settee is a double door vented hanging locker. Just aft of the locker is the Panasonic microwave oven. There are cabinets also built in to port and starboard above and for the entire length of the berths. More storage and systems access is found under the bunks as well. This is a well thought out, comfortable and large space with a lot of storage.  Natural light is provided by port lights and cabin windows. As usual reading and overhead lights keep things visible when it’s dark out.

The Aft Head is in the master stateroom located just forward of the port side double berth. This ensuite enclosed head also has a shower and floor sump covered by teak grate. The head is a manual Jabsco with ceramic toilet. Two cabinets outboard, and cabinet under the sink provide storage to this compact head.

Panther’s interior exudes quality with timeless features found on boats built 40 years later. The interior provides comfortable space, very well suited to those with lots of crew or wishing to go on extended passages. Excellent sea berths all have lee cloths to keep you where you are supposed to be while underway. The abundant storage capacity is luxurious and a must for the serious cruiser.
