Historic New Zealand Schooner
The schooner Valkyrie is, to our knowledge, the only cuadruple-planked kauri hulled vessel still in existence. She was built in 1928 at the famous Chas. Bailey yard in Auckland, New Zealand, for cruising the South Seas. She carried an easy-to-handle two masted schooner rig, the main Marconi and the foremast gaff rigged. Her heavy and rot-resistant construction enabled her to be intensely used for cruising over all these years, and still be stiff today. She survived her commissioning by the U.S. Navy as a barge in the Second World War; a reconnaissance trip to Pitcairn with the CIA to observe the French nuclear tests on the Mururoa Atoll; time dredging coral in Hawaii and, later, racing in San Francisco. On a trip from San Francisco to Panama, she even survived a stranding in the Bay of Panama, where she was sitting on the beach for a month before she could be towed off. The hull is still now strong and tight, without any signs of hogging. The vessel is currently in Panama, where a very committed shipwright continues the restoration and preservation of this magnificent vessel. Valkyrie deserves an owner who can appreciate the uniqueness and quality of her construction and who can enable her to continue sailing into the next century. For any interested party it would be convenient to get involved into the restoration at this early stage, since this will enable that person to customize the work according to individual tastes and needs. Don’t let escape this great opportunity to obtain one of the most extraordinary kauri-planked vessels still in existence, adapt it to your particular needs and call her your home!
