Known for their successful ultra light racers, Santa Cruz Yachts built the Santa Cruz 53C as a fully dedicated performance cruiser.  The Santa Cruz 53C has the same hull form as the racy 52 but incorporates a ton of features to that have simplified it for shorthanded sailing and has made it a much more offshore cruising oriented boat. Whereas the 52 was designed as a racer/cruiser and done well on the racecourse, the 53C has no racing pretenses and was developed out of the feedback from those who took their 52’s cruising.  The deck layout is simplified with the biggest asset being a hard dodger with the mainsheet attached to the top of the dodger. The expansive cockpit it now totally unencumbered by the mainsheet and traveler. The mainsheet winches still are aft so you can sail the boat single handed from the wheel. Conceptualized for couples doing long-distance cruising, the main can be reefed singlehandedly from the cockpit with all control lines for everything aft as well.
