Seaborn - KATE II

KATE II -Located in the picture perfect San Francisco Marina.

Built by BLANCHARD BOAT COMPANY - Seattle, Washington

Naval Architect - BEN SEABORN - Legendary name in Pacific Northwest

WINNER - 1960 Swiftsure Lightship Classic Race.  140 Nautical miles to the Swiftsure Bank at the beginning of the Juan de Fuca Strait, where she came in first over all.

KATE II - is a Seaborn 46 sloop, built in 1946 to a Ben Seaborn design by the N.J. Blanchard Boat Co. on Lake Union. Seattle, Washington.  She is built of red cedar planking, copper-fastened on oak frames, with teak and mahogany that had been saved through the war years by her first owner, Keith Fisken of the Seattle Yacht Club.  Originally named Nootka and carrying a fractional rig, her mast was subsequently shortened and she now flies a masthead jib and spinnaker.

Before coming south KATE II won many races in the Pacific Northwest, most notably the 140-mile Swiftsure Lightship Classic that runs the entire length of the Juan de Fuca Strait, from Victoria, B.C., around the lightship on the Swiftsure Bank at the entrance to the strait, and back.  Between 1957 and 1962 KATE II won her class five times, earning the nickname "Consistent Kate".  In the 1960 race she took the Swiftsure trophy for 1st place over all.

In 2007, KATE II was purchased and lovingly restored by her current owners and brought to San Francisco Bay.  In addition to extensive reconditioning of the decks, cabin, topsides and fittings, the work included updating all her systems, the running rigging to accommodate an asymmetrical spinnaker, the installation of a new wheel steering system and a new suit of sails by UK-Halsey of Alameda, California.  Since then she has resumed her racing career on San Francisco Bay.  She is a three-time winner of the Master Mariners Regatta , winning the coveted Baruna Cup for first to finish in the Ocean I Division in 2008, 2009 and in 2013 when she also won the Leukemia Cup.  The Baruna trophy is currently displayed in the lobby of the St. Francis Yacht Club.

KATE II is a rejuvenation of a beautifully classic yacht with professionally added modern rigging and systems to keep her happy for decades.

The cockpit of KATE II is over seven feet long with plenty of room for the crew to work comfortably and for entertaining after a days sail.  Storage is under all of the cockpit benches.  Classic/Traditional interior with galley immediately at the base of the companionway, Salon next Forward.  Settee berths port and starboard with drop leaf table.  Warm wood finishes, tons of storage.  Next forward is the head port side.  A private, light-filled V-Berth cabin is in the forepeak.  The V-Berth was configured to allow for either a double athwart ships or two single berths.  Drawers are located under each berth with chart storage beneath the forward cushion.  A very generous forward compartment with access either through the V-berth or from a large hatch located on deck for lines, fenders, sails etc. etc..   Headroom 6' 4" throughout.
