1982 Peterson 55 Checkmate

Checkmate, a 55’ Doug Peterson design, has an incredible racing pedigree. She has won the following races: Pan Am Clipper Cup in ’82 and ‘84, Transpac in her class numerous times, Big Boat Series twice, Puerto Vallarta Race, Mex-ORC, Cabo Race, Santa Monica Bay PHRF Championships, Marina del Rey to San Diego Race, and the  Oakland to Catalina Race. All attest to her great track record. She held the elapsed time record in the LA to La Paz for many years. The listing agent personally witnessed the boat win races in Hawaii including the Pan Am Clipper Cup and several Transpacs. She was built as a racer but can function as a cruiser.

Checkmate’s interior was in the process of being rebuilt when the owner passed away in 2013.  He was attempting to change the interior from a full-on racing design to more of a cruiser. Therefore, much of the interior is unfinished. There are six pipe berths aboard but not in place. Forward head is fully functional while the aft head is plumbed but not operative.

There are three ways to enter below decks: companionway from the cockpit, companionway forward of the grinders, and the large forward hatch for sails, lines and anchors. The bow is the sail and line storage area and for additional storage. There is a head on the port side. Continuing aft is the U-shaped galley and port and starboard settees.  The engine is center and aft of the galley. On each side of the engine are fold-out tables. There is a head starboard and aft of the engine.  On the starboard side is the second head. On port side is the navigation and chart station.  The king-sized master berth is center and aft cabin.  There is an additional companionway above the aft cabin with opening port to the cockpit.
