Morcambe Bay Prawner 34 - Classic Gaff Cutter

1900, long keel traditional gaff cutter, NEW sails 6 years ago by Lawrence, Vetus M3.10 20hp diesel, 4 berths, attractive classic yacht. Pitch Pine on Sawn Oak, new rudder 2011.

CONSTRUCTION                             Built in around 1900.  Carvel construction of pitch pine on sawn oak frames (except the 4 frames around the mast which were replaced in 2010 with laminated Iroko frames).  New Iroko floors were fitted in 2010 along with an Iroko mast stepped.  New rudder in 2011.   She was refastened with bronze screws and recaulked in 2009.  Iron ballast keel and lead internal ballast.  New stem, apron and breast hook in 2012.  New stem head fitting incorporating gammon iron and bow roller in 2012.  New stem band in 2012.  Gaff cutter rig and 4 berth internal layout.

SAILS  & RIG:                           She had replacement sails by James Lawrence of Brightlingsea in 2009 including new mainsail, new No 1 Jib, new No 2 Jib and new Staysail.  She has a topsail in good condition but year unknown.  Douglas Fir mast and spars with all running rigging new between 2009 and 2011.  Gaff new in 2011 from Douglas Fir, boom new in 2009 also in Douglas Fir and bowsprit new in 2011 in Douglas Fir.  Standing rigging is galvanised wire.

 

ENGINE:                                            Vetus 3-10 20HP 3 cylinder inboard diesel engine rebuilt in 2007.  Stern tube, prop shaft, coupling and propeller all new in 2011.  Alternator charging to 2 x 85 amp/hr 12 volt batteries in plastic boxes (batteries new in 2010), 40 litre plastic fuel tank renewed in 2010.  Shaft drive to 3 blade fixed propeller. 

 

FUEL & WATER:                               Fuel capacity  40 litres

DECK GEAR:                              Cockpit cover, winter cover, tiller, spinnaker pole, whisker pole, 2 sheet winches, 35lb CQR main anchor with 10m of ½” chain and 30m warp, manual anchor windlass, Bruce kedge anchor with chain and warp, various mooring warps and fenders.  A deep mooring tackle could be included in the sale which comprises of 2 x 40kg Danforth type anchors, 100ft of chain, 33ft of 15mm riser chain and 2’6” (75cm) buoy, all new in 2008, to be discussed with the owner. 

 

SAFETY GEAR:                           Manual fire extinguisher, electric bilge pump, manual bilge pump.

 

NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT:        Plastimo compass, NASA Target 2 echo sounder, Garmin 451 chart plotter/GPS, ICOM DSC/VHF radio, navigation light boards which fit on to the shrouds, all battery cables replaced in 2010.

 

DOMESTIC EQUIPMENT:            She has 12 volt lighting in the main and forward cabins.  Her galley has a gas cooker with 2 burners and grill.  Red vinyl upholstery. 

 

ACCOMMODATION:                   She has 4 berths in 2 cabins including 2 “V” berths in the forepeak and 2 single saloon berths. 

 

 

REMARKS:                                “Empress” is a very attractive and well maintained example of these popular classic yachts.  Her last survey was carried out in 2009 and her topsides were last painted in 2013.  Her decks have GRP sheathed for protection.  Engine has been serviced annually and sails were all replaced in 2009.  She has been much updated in recent years and is excellent value for money.
