SOPHIA was designed by the highly reputable Englishman Arthur Robb SUPERSTRUCTURE: HULL MATERIAL Mahogany on oak BOTTOM Soundings performed at six-inch intervals with excellent results – garboards recently refastened – bottom “wooded” (all paint removed down to the bare wood) two years ago and re-painted KEEL Lead keel Bronze centerboard – centerboard trunk and surrounding floors recently re-built by Seal Cove Boat Yard in Brooksville, ME. Bronze pivoting pin recently removed for inspection and cleaning and reinserted New bronze 5/8” keel bolts recently installed in area of new mast step and floor timbers – (original bolts were still in excellent condition when removed). Worm shoe aft of ballast keel is a little rough and could use some fairing BALLAST 7000 lbs lead TOPSIDES Re-fasting recently completed, especially in hood ends of bow STEM Sound where observable in bow anchor locker area STERNPOST & TRANSOM Sound – transom recently rebuilt by Seal Cove Boat Yard FRAMES Oak – 1 ½” x 1” steam-bent FASTENINGS Originally copper boat nails with new bronze screws at hood ends in bow, at garboards and at mast step area – the present owner has been re-fasting the vessel as needed where needed over the years FLOORS Originally oak – many floors recently professionally replaced with locust especially at mast step area. Iron strapping on floor timbers recently needle-gunned to remove rust and treated with rust preventive coating and coal tar. PLANKING Mahogany BUTTS One butt and plank edge starboard side amidship below the waterline a couple of feet down slightly “proud” DECKING Fiberglass over 5/8” ply – in 2010 toe rail was removed as well as all deck hardware except chain plates, deck repaired where necessary, re-glassed and painted with Awlgrip, then equipment and toe rail replaced with new bedding and backing plates. Cockpit recently re-built in 2003 with new under decking, teak sole, seats and lockers. Cabin trunk solid mahogany – sound and secure with no signs of leakage – cabin trunk. SHEER CLAMP, SHEER STRAKE & SHELF CLAMP Oak STRINGERS & CARLINS Oak RAILS Varnished teak toe rail was removed to facilitate repair of deck and replaced. DECK EQUIPMENT All deck equipment recently removed to facilitate deck repair and then re-bedded and rebolted with new backing plates. RAILINGS & PULPITS SS bow and stern rails recently removed at time of deck repair then re-bedded and re-bolted with new backing plates. Secure. BULKHEADS & CEILINGS There is a full planked ceiling in the living quarters of the vessel. SS bow pulpit with running lights mounted on SS plates. Bronze bow fitting has SS bow roller with guard and anchor ready to run. Fitting also has SS chainplate for forestay and shackle with rings. Bronze chocks on toe rail. Anchor chain runs to Lewmar SS vertically-mounted electric windlass. Hawsepipe (for running chain below decks before installation of windlass). Cowl vent. SUPERSTRUCTURE Forward wall and eyebrows finished bright. Three fixed ports and one opening screened bronze port each side. Handrails full length – secure. Fore hatch of varnished wood frame and clear plexi in good condition SS chimney for propane heating stove. Companionway offset to starboard, # 16 Lewmar self-tailing winch, car and blocks for main sheet and bronze cleat to port. Painted companionway hatch with varnished trim and varnished “securing board” and SS sill guard. SIDE DECKS Three bronze chainplates for main and two for mizzen, SS tracks mounted on toe rail. SS stanchion posts with braced bases recently removed for deck repair and re-bedded. COCKPIT Under deck and most of teak cladding on sole and seats new. Varnished coamings with primary and secondary winches on teak bases outboard with varnished cleats. Teak bridge deck – decorative port to starboard and electronic displays to port in aft cabin wall. Lower cockpit wall under bridge deck has engine control panel. Full sail lockers below seats. Pedestal with binnacle mounted compass with bronze housing, Edson steel and wood wheel with new rack and pinion steering in 2012. New teak steering box/helm seat. New bronze drains with new sea-cocks and hoses AFTERDECK Two varnished lazarette hatches, one has vented propane locker with tank and solenoid and one with storage for fenders and dock lines. Cowl vent, large chromed bronze cleat, chromed bronze chocks and flagpole holder. Bronze tracks on both masts and internal electrical wires on main mast.. Varnished spreaders with deck lights. STANDING RIGGING SS wire – Furlex roller furling new in 2000 Varnished wood shroud covers and SS chafe covers SS turnbuckles MAST SUPPORT, STEP, PARTNERS & CHAINPLATES Mast step area re-built recently with new floor timbers in this area and six or seven new 5/8” bronze keel bolts. Main mast area is further reinforced by hanging knees, lodging knees and shelf clamp. RUNNING RIGGING Excellent condition where observable except for spinnaker halyard which is showing signs of UV deterioration.
