Wharram Oro

Some projects take time.  Years can elapse between the selection of a design and the wetting of hulls.  Sometimes decades.  This is a Custom Oro 46'.  One of the oldest of Wharram's designs yet it was launched in 2011.  She was many years in the making and went through a succession of builders' interpretations.  Her rig is eclectic - almost Steampunk.  Her tramps are only for daysailing.  She wants a proper steering system.  She will (always) need some refinishing.  She is fairly bare bones but a classic.  Further interpretation and effort are required before she lives up to her bluewater heritage.  But the gruelling work is done.  Years of effort have been expended. Refitting is months not years.  800 square feet, 3 cabins, a galley, head, flexi-space, a pilothouse, and a manageable ketch rig invite your finishing touches.

She has a single 9.9hp, 4-stroke Yamaha outboard long-shaft and high-thrust motor, with less than 20 hours.

There are three sleeping berths, two on the port side and one on starboard. There is a galley on the port side and a work/navigation room on the starboard. The galley and workroom have standing headroom. The head and tub are on the starboard hull. There is no toilet, but it is plumbed for one. There is a sink in the bathroom. The galley has a two-burner propane stove and oven. Each hull has a Force 10 propane heater. Appliances are plumbed for propane. There are three battery banks on the vessel. The cockpit has two 12-v batteries (one is back-up) to start the motor as well as for the mast and deck lights. Each hull has an independent 12-v battery. There is a charger and inverter in the starboard hull.

The deck hardware is all over-sized and mismatched. There are winches for sheets, halyards and the bow/working anchor. They are all manual. The bow/working anchor is a Bruce, approximately 40 pounds. The stern anchor is a plow, approximately 20 pounds. Rode is chain and rope for both. The bow area has a solid net under a wooden work plank. The stern area is divided by a net (starboard) and a ramp (port). The cockpit has benches for eight with a chart table in the middle. The cockpit is essentially a 50% enclosed hard dodger. Initially a steering wheel was planned, but for now a tiller extension off the left rudder is used.  The rudders are well-connected with a cross-member. There are two largish lazarettes in the aft stern hulls, big enough for a hammock or head. And there are two similar sized lockers in the bows. She comes with five fenders, bow and stern dock lines, two spring lines and a beefy bow bridal for anchoring or attaching to a mooring buoy.
