Calumet Shipyard Ocean Going Tug - New arrival

“Sovereign” was built by Calumet Shipyard & Dry Dock, Chicago USA, in April 1944, as a U.S. Army tug for towing supplies to the Aleutian's during the Second World War. Her original name was "MAJ Richard M. Strong (LT-62)". “Sovereign” has a long and rich history that started with World War II and from half a century in the Pacific Coastal Trade.

September 23, 1949, while she was still in service for the Army, she sank at Camp Point near the north end of Vancouver Island. She was feared to be a total loss but a combined salvage effort by Straits Towing, Island Tug & Barge and Pacific Salvage, who had pooled their resources, salvaged the ship in just 14 days. Island Tug & Barge of Victoria, BC acquired the 123-foot tug, rebuilt and renamed her “Island Sovereign” in 1950. After the merger of Island Tug and Vancouver Tug around 1972, she became known as the "Seaspan Sovereign", and was renamed "Sovereign" after her retirement a couple of years ago.

"Sovereign" is currently laid-up in Vancouver, and is now available to be purchased. She has been very well maintained over the years although some of the navigation equipment has been moved to other tugs. The recently expired certificates and surveys can be viewed on inspection. This Lady is the perfect conversion candidate for possible charter or industrial use, or to become your own yacht after upgrades for the specific use.

“Sovereign” is primarily for sale as a yacht conversion project or as a tug, note that she is  not available for sale as commercial tug to be used on the US and Canada West Coast.
