Colvin Saugeen Witch

This is a 34' Thomas Colvin design known as a Saugeen Witch, this was the smallest of Colvin's ocean sailing designs with stand up headroom (5'11").  This vessel is rigged as a gaff ketch with a club footed staysail and yankee.  These vessels are designed and built to be simple resulting in an affordable vessel that can take their adventurous skippers very far indeed.  A simple boat like this could be fitted and repaired in remote ports all over the world.  A few notable design features are the good sized bulwarks with large scuppers, high bow with a fine entry for upwind runs, low freeboard aft. and a significant sheer promoting good deck drainage. Many of the Colvin designs have logged long passages in many oceans.

This particular vessel was owner built in the 80s and reportedly launched in 1988 with the intention to sail to distant coasts.  The current owner has done many improvements over the last few years and the boat would be best described as a clean, basic cruiser or live aboard.  This is a boat that will appeal to someone who would appreciate a very durable boat with a simple and bright interior.   The vessel is loaded with maintenance supplies, spares, books, charts and many other items that will help the next owner on their way.

If you are an adventurer wanting to log many sea miles, or someone who just appreciates a very salty boat for local cruising this is a great option.

DESIGNS:    Moderate displacement ocean sailing designs range from 25’ to 125’. This family of vessels is based on a 125’ cargo schooner.

The smallest of these designs that has full headroom is the 34’ SAUGEEN WITCH and many of these have been built by professionals and owner/builders.  I built five of these in steel in my yard, one of which was modified to use round bottom construction. All the others were V bottom single chine hulls. This particular design has been used for extended ocean voyaging, including the Arctic regions of Norway, Iceland and Greenland, German rivers, Vancouver to Hawaii and back, as well as other areas of the world. No matter which of the numerous rigs that have been used on this design, which include Bahamian sloop, gaff ketch, jib-headed ketch, gaff schooner, and Chinese lug schooner, she has always balanced out and was easy to trim for self-steering. They make good passages and are excellent heavy weather sailers. Several have circumnavigated.
