SUNDOWNER is a custom designed and built 44' Center-Cockpit, shoal draft Cutter. She was conceived and built over a period of eleven years by her engineer owner who has seven yacht designs to his credit. With her airex-cored sandwich construction. She has a relatively light displacement for her 44' length, ensuring her fast sailing ability. Her two pedestal wheels gives her the feel of a modern racing vessel. HULL AND DECK:

  • Hull is fiberglass sandwich construction using 4 layers of unidirectional fiberglass on outside perpendicular to each other with 3/4" airex core foam and three layers of fiberglass on inside using polyester resin.
  • Deck is 1" fiberglass and airex core construction, with laid and caulked1/2" teak overlay, glued and riveted using 5200 bedding.
  • Decks are also cambered.
  • Black hull painted using two part paint.
  • Self-bailing split cockpit with port and starboard Edson pedestal wheels. Steering system designed using ball bearings for exceptionally smooth steering (S/S cables lead to large quadrant which sets on rudder shaft and has rudder stops).
  • 6 coats of West System epoxy applied to bottom to prevent osmotic blisters.
  • White boottop, Red Copperkote bottom paint.
  • Low profile white fiberglass cabin trunk for less windage and very attractive lines.
  • Hull to deck joint bonded by a number of fiberglass laminates glued over inside of hull and under deck, with teak toerails thru-bolted over.
  • 5" varnished teak toerails thru-bolted to hull on 12" centers.
  • Double lifelines; S/S bow and stern rails, and stanchions. Stanchion bases are thru-bolted under decks.
  • S/S dorade vents forward and aft.
  • Three Lexan and teak framed deck hatches.
  • Varnished teak exterior trim including teak cockpit coamings.
  • 7' bronze hollow centerboard is custom-designed, filled with lead ballast (7,000 lbs).
  • Large hydraulic piston raises and lowers the centerboard.
  • The fiberglass hull around the centerboard trunk (up to 3' from centerline) is solid fiberglass.
  • Prop is protected in aperture.
  • Bronze ball-type seacocks set in solid fiberglass and bolted.   

 

TANKAGE:

Fuel: approximately 40 gallons in integral fiberglass tank.

Water: 160 gallons in two S/S tanks under main salon sole.

Holding: 12 gallons in S/S tank for aft head only with y-valve to deck discharge or overboard.

 

ENGINE & MACHINERY:

  • 1990 Yanmar 3GM30 diesel, 27 hp, 3 cylinder, FWC.
  • 652 hours as seen on the meter.
  • Cruising speed: 6 knots @ 2000 RPM.
  • Maximum speed: 8 knots @ 3600 RPM.
  • 1 1/4" S/S shaft with 4" belt-drive from engine to hydraulic shaft actuator.
  • 2 bladed Sabb variable pitched 19" bronze prop.
  • S/S stuffing box.
  • Racor fuel filter.
  • Teleflex engine controls (steering under power is from starboard side only).

 

ELECTRICAL:

  • 12V D-110V AC electrical systems.
  • 30 amp shore power service with shore cord.
  • 115 amp alternator for house service.
  • 35 amp alternator for engine service.
  • Two sets of batteries, new since 2011: 1-12V heavy duty marine battery for house; 2-12V heavy duty marine battery for engine.
  • Combiner battery switch.
  • Circuit breaker AC-DC panels.
  • 40 gallon SPS Marine hot water heater (presently disconnected, but can be easily reconnected).

 

ACCOMMODATIONS:

  • For eight in a spacious three cabin, two head layout with U-shaped galley to port, aft facing navigation station to starboard with swivel seat.
  • The interior joinery is varnished teak to a very professional standard with varnished teak and holly soles, S/S Frigast reading lights, teak hull ceilings, and white overheads.
  • A vee berth cabin is forward with a forward enclosed head.
  • There are port and starboard settees which convert to upper and lower bunks.
  • Next is the spacious main salon with L-settee to port and straight settee to starboard.
  • Storage is behind all the settee berths, hanging locker is forward to port.
  • There is a drop leaf teak dining table with inlay in the main salon.
  • Wrap-around port galley includes large S/S lined icebox with 4" insulation, double S/S sink with hot and cold pressure water, storage lockers, 3 burner Shipmate gimballed LPG stove with oven with solenoid shutoff.
  • LPG bottle is situated in vented locker in cockpit.
  • Further aft is the engine space to starboard, in passageway to aft cabin.
  • There is a solid maple butcher-block work bench over engine.
  • To port and aft is a second enclosed head with Corian counter and sink, manual head and handheld shower.
  • The owner's cabin is aft with a large offset double to starboard, an open space to port where another bunk could be added. A second companionway to the deck is all the way aft.
  • Headroom:6'2" - 6'3".

  • ICOM M56 VHF radio.
  • Two Ritchie binnacle compasses.

  • Original Hood mainsail with two sets of reef points.
  • 2010 Doyle 110% genoa (serviceable condition).
  • Hood staysail (hardly used).

  • 1 Anderson 56 S.T. genoa winch, center mounted.
  • 2 Anderson 46 S.T. winches for staysail.

  • 15 lb Danforth anchor with rode.
  • 35 lb Delta anchor with rode.
  • 20 lb Danforth anchor.
