The first Bertram 46 premiered in 1972. Production continued until 1988 and was sold worldwide. Avid sport fisherman preferred the 46 Convertible, Straight off the production line, the Bertram 46 featured Detroit Diesel 8V71TIs or 8V92s. As is expected of the Bertram tradition, Bertram 46 Convertibles feature the famous Bertram deep V hull to allow better slicing through waves. The deep V hull was designed to handle rough waters, narrower at the bow and wider at the stern so the bow rests high on the water.  The characteristic deep V hull design is less efficient at slower speeds, therefore optimal operation is rated around 2000-2100 RPM, achieving an average speed of 18-20 knots. Tower may knock roughly 2 knots off the speed due to drag.

Displacement averages roughly 1,000 lbs per foot. A Bertram 46 produced between 1972 and 1988 features a 16’ beam, dead rise of 19 degrees, LOA of 46.6, and average weight of 44,900 lbs. Steering on most Bertram 46 Convertibles is positioned on the fly bridge for better navigation and sighting of prey maneuvers.

The overall exterior design of a Bertram 46 still looks good, even more than 27 years post production. The superior craftsmanship of the hull, the revolutionary deep V design allows helmsmen to slice through three and four foot waves with ease and Bertram’s reputation for quality control and the best R&D in the industry are the primary reason these boats are still afloat today. Bertram built a reputation for outstanding seaworthiness, especially in areas where good mechanics and parts were hard to obtain. These boats were built for rough waters in areas where coming into port for repairs simply were not an option.

Laminates on a Bertram 46 are often rumored to be thicker than other manufacturers. In truth, they are not, although Bertrams do resist stress cracks and blister better than most. However, the woven roving construction and high quality resin coating make these fiberglass hulls seem more like a tank than its competitors do. Lee Dana, the now retired chief of engineering for Bertram for 30 years, understood what a boat had to have, and what could be marginalized. Therefore, he opted to skip popular exotics and foam cored hulls, keeping what worked for rough seas. That meant lesser quality resins on interiors, with the highest quality resin available for exteriors, not to mention sturdy, durable woven roving ~ classicbertram.com
